What is HD Digital Radio?

It?s the most significant advancement in radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago. HD Radio technology enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally ? a tremendous technological leap from the analog broadcasts of the past.

It's a secondary digital signal piggy-backed onto the existing analog signal. Traditional terrestrial radio stations are starting to feel the heat from the satellite market. Since they can't get around the FCC regarding content, the only value-add left is "CD quality" audio.

Much like HDTV broadcasts, some stations are already broadcasting in this format but you need a special receiver to decode it.

It'll be interesting to see whether this catches on or bites the dust like stereo AM did in the 90s.

Is that the same as DAB?

If so we have had in the UK for a while - its pretty good - easily CD or better.

FM usually sounds clear enough anyway unless the station is out of range, I don't really see how this would appeal to anyone except for maybe a small handfull of true audiophiles

Not sure if it's the same as DAB or not. I haven't heard of any additional channels being offered in the US version.

And I agree about FM. If I'm going to bother replacing the head unit in my car I'd go with satellite if analog wasn't good enough.

sounds pretty good, but I'm not going to upgrade my radio just so I can listen to it...
