I saw how a local township website around me got Cyberjacked - on the news the other day.

Some Russians apparentely had to have gotten one of those scripts that stalks domain names - and alerts you the second they are 'available'.

if it's a simple thing to hit the 'whois' database they're easy to create and have been around forever.

now it if's something that can somehow detect from verisign's registry (which they themselves claim "we don't know when domains are actually deleted") then it is something i want to see too!

my friend wrote a script back in 98 to do a daily (or at a set interval) check of domain names and register them if available. it's not too hard =) the problem is verisign holds on to domains of 'value' even though it's supposedly an automated removal process ~ 40 days after expiry date.

the scripts that somehow detect verisign's database removing the domains? i'd like to see them, i talked with one of their representatives and he said it's an automated process but apparently there's no algorithm behind it. he cited one domain which expired in oct 2001 and was still around in apr 2002.. and other "high profile" ones happen to hang around longer than normal as well.. how can someone write a script for that?

can you IM me this info, i would like to see these people's claims, it would make some good late-night humor.

I saw a php script on clickmojo that checked domains at a set interval if they had become deleted and icq'ed you when it was free to register

well i'm still going to consider them "easy scripts" then - just shit hitting the whois database, since that's the only publically accessable record, not even registrars have a better view into shit. the only people that do is verisign, who like i say, claim they don't even know their own algorithm.

if the site became available ...... even for 5 minutes .... than there is no wrong doing in anybody else registering it ...

I am notified 2 fucking months before a domain becomes due ... so if two months is not enough time time to put down another $8 to register it fo one more year ... it is free game to anybody to grab it !!:eek2

I don't care how GOOD the name is .... if it is that good .... than you had better well make fucking sure the domain is paid up to date ...
