GFY Parents, I Have A Sick Kid And Need Some Help

My young guy 3 1/2 has a very bad cough and a sore stomach does anyone know any good online resources to go reseach this kind of ailment?

He's had the cough since Friday and it just seems to get worse now and he's sneezing like crazy today. I really don't want to take him to the hospital over this because I don't think it's at that point yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

DH

for his coughing and this isn't a joke but rub Vicks vaporub or anything with methenol on his feet( or chest) it unblocks the trigger that makes him cough but if hes sneezing and running a bad fever take him... coughing and sneezing sounds like and allergy but the stomach has me wondering.... try webmd.com

im not a smart man but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night :winkwink:

tony286 05-29-2006 09:19 PM

take him to a doctor tomorrow

Malicious Biz 05-29-2006 09:20 PM

he's some advice.. seek medical advice from people who know medicine... alot of people he barely know anything about being webmasters let alone medicine.

DaLord 05-29-2006 09:20 PM

I'm not sure if it's any good for you but it's worth a shot http://www.netdoctor.co.uk

Everything in the world can be cured with Robitussin.

WarChild 05-29-2006 09:21 PM

Why not just take him to your family doctor, or better yes his pediatrician?

Vics Vaporub is already on his chest, I just put a humidifier beside his bed as well. Hoping that will relieve a bit of the coughing.

I'd take him to the doctor, Better safe than sorry and they will know what to do for sure.

I will tomorrow if the cough doesn't let up, I'm hoping it's something we can deal with at home though.

Coughs and "sore stomachs" rarely go hand-in-hand, I would be willing to bet it is more like his lungs.

GFY probably isn't the best place to seek medical advice for your kid.

Ahh you're in Canada though. Use that insurance, don't take any risks. You never know, right?

MrKinkade 05-29-2006 09:24 PM

I'll tell you what the DR or pedeorician will say ( i got brothers and sisters a 1 year old and 5 Nieces and nephews) take some motrin or ibupophin (sp) and if it gets worse bring him back in.....

always stay on the side of safe though JMHO

the coughing and sneezing sounds like his sinuses are draining in his throat causing the cough

his stomach muscles might be sore from coughing for 4 days

dry up his sinuses with some tavist d or Tylenol sinus etc etc... and the coughing and sneezing should stop

Not a parent, DH, but having been one of those chronically sick kids, I'd say take him into the doc's tomorrow morning just to be on the safe side. In the meantime, try propping a pillow behind his back so that his isn't lying flat on his back - should relieve some of the pressure on his lungs and the coughing.

Antibiotics. Go to a doctor.

Asking for medical advice for the most precious thing in your life here on GFY?

It doesn't take someone who stayed in a Holiday inn Express last night to tell you that the best advice in this thread is indeed to take him to a doctor since it has been four days.

Can you guys lighten up with the "questions on GFY" shit already? DrinkingHARDEST is a fucking SMART guy and realizes he isn't likely to find a fucking Doctor to answer his question. However, there's no reason why many parents on such a large active board couldn't give him some INTERIM ADVICE about it.

I agree, it is no different than calling mom or whomever and asking why the baby looks a little yellow or whatever. People been doing it forever and we all made it.

BTW Brujah always was curious did your nick come from a certain rpg?

Check his throat - is he pulling in the skin when he's breathing? Is he pulling in the skin on his ribs when breathing? *could be asthma/bronchitis*
I'd say the sore stomach is due to the excessive coughing.

I'd still take him to a hospital or a clinic in the area - better at this hour than tomorrow morning too.

GeorgeK 05-29-2006 09:46 PM

Since you're in Ontario, you can use the free Telehealth Hotline (talk to a nurse live., 24x7). See:

http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/...health_mn.html

mikesouth 05-29-2006 09:53 PM

Im not a parent but I can tell ya the key to this watch the lil guys temp if it gets over about 101 get him to the doc otherwise it will wait till tomorrow

sounds like croup and if he has been coughing since fri his stomach will hurt cuz the stomach muscles will be sore from all the coughing.

as for the congestion if he is coughing it up and spitting it out thats actually a good sign, if he isn't coughing it up thats a bad sign but not a dire sign just means a visit to the doc is in order

The big thing between him and the ER is that temperature though

What he said... and before any of you morons "doubt", I have medical training like none of you would believe. (The kind that has seen severed limbs and re-started hearts... oh yeah and I have a 3.5 year old too).

I would recommend Robitussin at the dose that your Pedatrician says (to relieve the cough and assist with sleep), a humidifer (depending on where you live), and lots of "cuddles". At that age they love it. I'm also with Trixxia above... if this sounds "wheezy" or "ashmatic" or if you think for even a second that your lil one is having problems getting oxygen, don't WAIT.. go to the nearest ER and have them help.

Hope your lil guy or gal feels better.
Bling.

tony286 05-29-2006 09:59 PM

you dont want to screw around with coughs my grandmother spent the last years of her life on oxygen. She never smoked the reason why was all the times in her life she had chest colds and coughs and ignored it. Created scar tissue and her lungs couldnt expand anymore.

Yes, way back in early 90s.. just stuck with it even tho I haven't had anything to do with it for 10+ years now.

Tam 05-29-2006 10:00 PM

Me and my son both suffer from severe allergies this time of the year and we take Benedryl like there is no tomorrow. For the soreness, he can take children's motrin, that will help for that. That's what my kids have always taken for things like this, it helps with the soreness.

I agree on the Vick's, that's a lifesaver when it comes to the coughing.

LMAO... Robitussin is quite powerful under certian circumstances.... :)

marketsmart 05-29-2006 10:41 PM

DH, take you rkid to the doctor... could be allergies, asthma, or a multitude of problems... if he has a fever/elevated temp, combined with stomach pain could be appendicitis (lower right abdomen pain) or hernia, or ruptured bowel... or nothing....

like i said... could be anything and better safe than sorry....

madawgz 05-29-2006 10:44 PM

cmon, dont be scared to go to the doctor!

BVF 05-29-2006 10:46 PM

I think something's going around Mark.

I got the same symptoms kindof... no more sneezing just a nasty cough.

He should be ok with the vapor rub and humidifier. If he still is coughing in the morning bring him to the pediatrition or specialist.
