White Stripes

"Fell in Love with a Girl"

...that song rocks...:thumbsup

MrBandwidth 05-23-2002 01:47 PM

They're playing in Detroit tonight...should be a cool show!

:thumbsup

Evil Chris 05-23-2002 02:00 PM

I understand they are from Detroit too....

Steve 05-23-2002 02:02 PM

gotta agree - I like that song

[Labret] 05-23-2002 03:26 PM

Yes, from Detroit.

Not really brother and sister. Its actually his ex wife.

Not bad for just a guitar and drums.

The rest of their songs are not so hot though. This whole stripped down 70s style glam punk rock shit is gonna be the next fad, you can already smell it. The Hives, Strokes, White Stripes, and a host of other bands trying to resurrect that shit.

Although I will admit that even though it is gonna end up some passing whored out music trend, its is far better than 90% of the shit polluting the airwaves and television.

The best music never makes it on the radio, and never even comes close to a video music channel.

Steve 05-23-2002 03:33 PM

Gotta agree with Labret there - best music I got to listen to was a college radio station called WSOU when I lived in NJ. Pissed all over the commercial stations in NYC.

shann 05-23-2002 05:52 PM

I'm all for the revival of glam rock and punk. Not just the music, but the whole attitude. Not that i want to EVER have big hair again b/c i do NOT! LOL

Robin F**king Black and the INtergalactic Rockstars, anyone hear of them? Same kinda deal, total glam rock, i LOVE it!

bhutocracy 05-23-2002 06:03 PM

they're pretty good.. and yes as labret said it will be the start of a whorish trend.. but *shrugs* it's good stuff so far.. 'cept the strokes look like a bunch of pretentious wankers :) - that white stipes lego video clip blew me away first time i saw it.

Evil Chris 05-23-2002 07:37 PM

They make me think of T-Rex.... well, a little bit. Only faster.

DigitalPimpShit 05-23-2002 07:44 PM

I saw them on Leno or something like a year ago, they were absolutely horrible, thier new song is better, but the other stuff is crap

[Labret] 05-23-2002 08:00 PM

Its all a little too contrived for me.

Every member of the band is just a little too geek chic to me. Like fucking Weezer. Those fucking ass rangers.

The white striped turned down a 1 million dollar offer from the Gap to do one of those horrid Gap commercials. You know when the Gap wants you its all over.

Its too bad, the white stripes were a good novelty act. A 2 person band that just tears shit up. But now MTV has them, the Gap wants them, and pretty soon every store in the mall will be selling white stripes shit. Its over, they are done.

Look what happened to At The Drive In. Damn good band with some catchy tunes... raped into oblivion.

When fratboys and 16 year old girls like it... its all over.

Evil Chris 05-24-2002 09:08 AM

See.... this is exactly why I still listen to Mudhoney...

Can you imagine Mark Arm in a Gap commercial? hehehehe....

G Sharp 06-03-2002 07:50 AM

Just got their album, this band is definitely one to watch out for. They just sound different from most of the commercialized slush that's out there. Their songs actually have passion, emotional urgency, and very very inventive and witty. Can't wait to see them live. :thumbsup Their song "Hotel Yorba" rocks!

Milton 06-03-2002 08:02 AM

congrats actually i need some love also

Seb From Holland 06-03-2002 08:17 AM

most decent new bands get hyped into MTV oblivion.. it seems to be happening more and more lately.. sure there was always tonnes of hype.. but theres been a real desperation tinge to it lately.. every new fucking band is the "saviour of rock" all great bands - ATDI, QOTSA, strokes, white stripes, sigur ros (not rock but y'know) etc etc. but it's as though music journo's are racing to put that tag to them first so they've got bragging rights if they hit it big.. it's sort of seeing bands explode and getting GAP trying to buy their "cool" 6 months after they get their first bit of local press.. (not of course that the bands haven't been working their asses off for years beforehand)..

then again I probably shouldn't complain too much.. without the hype I probably wouldn't hear some of the stuff here in aus. I already have to sift through amazon.com's commenteers and "if you liked this then..." for hours to find obscure overseas stuff that you'd only be able to find over here if someone pawned a cd they'd bought online or O/S.. saves me going to stinky record stores full of people and listening to CD's full of cigarette burns.

So going with that rationale, a band ceases to have artistic value once they reach mass media acceptance? In your view, "real" music can only be made for small regionalized audiences or "people in the know"? What about the the Beatles, they were widely accepted but nobody can dispute their influence?

It seems that the whole "starving artist" purist aesthetic is really quite elitist--only "people in the know" know what "real music" should be.
