300 gig external HD's - Seagate? Maxtor? Western Digital? Which do you prefer & why?
Was talking to two guys at Fry's today that are composers and beat the shit out of their drives (so they say) - both said go for the Seagate because it was the "best buy" - and a really good external drive.
Fry's online is only $149.00 FREE s&h but the store price was $189.99 so here I am asking you! Hmmmmmmmmm? BTW - just did some price comparisons on all of them and they're a little all over the place. Which one do you think is better and why? Thanks! :) . |
I've never had much luck with seagate. Of course, the last seagate hard drive that I owned was like 6 years ago. Right now I have a western digital and have not had any problems with it so I'd have to assume that an external WD drive would be just as good.
its funny you bring this up, I was just looking at externals today. bump for this thread.
WD, most of the time. 2hp |
Get the Seagate..never had a problem
Western Digital. Because I've never had a WD die on me.
I've had Maxtor's die on me after a couple of years. |
Just not a maxtor
Never had seagate or WD fail |
I have heard no maxtors too, cool

I have always worked with WD never had a problem
Seagate cause they're quiet
i own tons..
i was a maxtor guy until one just shit the bed on me. i went with seagate after that. Seagate is slower, but its a great drive. i opened it up and it was vacum sealed. That gave me a vote of confidence before i even plugged it in. i would go with seagate. maxtors stack up more neatly side by side though :) cheers duke |
I'm a fan of Lacie HD's, reliable and not over priced. I used to use WD but always had problems.:2 cents:

Never had problems with Maxtors and we have a lot of them but mostly using http://www.buffalotech.com/ now.
I have got 4 maxtor drives and never had any problems. :)
Seagates and I vote for either the 400gb or 500gb
I'm a WD guy.
It;s what works, and I plan on sticking to it. |

WD is good for me!
i think i nearly had every brand now - and every single of them failed at least once. Maxtor failed more than once, but I have a lot of them.
and fyi: LaCie or Buffalo do not build drives, just the cases. Buffalo for example uses WD drives. I just bought two 1 TB Terrastations. |

Lacies's use Maxtor drives. I got 3 dead Lacie 500GB external drives here. Buffalo uses Seagates, atleast on their 2TB enclosure. |
I have 11 of the Seagate 300 gb all are working perfectly.
Seagates and the 5 year warranties. Stay away from Maxtor. WD isn't much better.
Seagate and Western are reasonably safe bets.
I will never use a drive without backup again. 1 crash is all you need to justify the price of one of these.

I always buy seagates. Only a few have died on me and they're the most quiet
I just bought a new external drive with a 300gb seagate drive in it. I used to buy WD and IBM but those disk just crashed on me so I started to buy Seagate after a good friend recommended them to me and they havent been anything but great to me.. The seagate disks are also by far the most silent disks on the market. :)
