Your workstation(s)

Does anyone use a stand-up workspace?

I know what I'm thinking of, but I can't find any kind of a picture of it.... it's like... a desk that you stand at instead of sitting in a chair.... but I guess you could sit on a tall chair.... like a big stool... I guess kinda like a tall drafting table type thing, but built more like with a desk surface.....

does any of this make any fucking sense? :eek7

I've looked at places like Office Max online and shit, but I can't find anything like it....

Pipecrew 05-22-2002 09:09 AM

wouldnt sitting on a stool all the time start to be bad on your back?

ElvisManson 05-22-2002 09:10 AM

Dude...why would you want to stand all day?:question

I stand while working a lot, being an analog synthesizer freak my key board stands are all around me all day so I play standing up, and a lot of times I run uploads and shit standing up hehehe but rarely design standing up, depends on the furniture ya have... if you have one of the traditional drawing desks that are higher than most its easier to work as artists have done this for years ;)

But a desktop wouldnt work too well on an art desk, kinda clashes too much since I can still do so much mroe with a pen or pencil than Photoshop, that will never change...

cuz, I've been giving this some serious consideration lately.... as much as I hate to admit this, I experience burnout just as much as anyone else. And I'm thinking it has alot to do with sitting in this big comfy office chair all day like a freakin' lump. I thought if I could set up another workstation, a standing one, that it would add more of a sense of urgency to the work. Better productivity.

at least that's what I was thinking..... it sounds like a solid theory.

cherrylula 05-22-2002 09:18 AM

Try IKEA... they have lots of modular furniture and stuff with adjustable legs.

Or perhaps what you need would be in the kitchen furniture department.

Workstation eh? You'll be the pride of the trailer park.

NetRodent 05-22-2002 09:20 AM

The terminal in our server room is stand up use. Its mounted at chest level on a shelf on the open rack that also houses our switches and router. Its convienent for doing short jobs while wandering around the server room, as it saves bending over or having to sit-down and stand up repeatedly. It certainly isn't set up to use as a prolonged work space since its rather lacking in surface area.

makes sense...though if you need a sense of urgency you could just pay me to call every few hours and freak out 'cause my designs aren't done :winkwink:

Before you put money into this.....
I'd try standing and typing...

In that case Amp, why don't you attatch a keyboard to your treadmill and set up your computer to run off the power generated from the movement of the belt that you cause while running at top speed?
:thumbsup

Amp that is what I do... working standing up is great. I dont do it all the time, but I do find myself in need to stretch out my legs, so I found myself standing and leaning over to type, but tis not good for your back, get a higher desk man and rock out witcha cock out!

exactly..... I wanna ADD to my setup.. .. not change it.... I figured I could work at the stand up station as much as possible, and if it gets uncomfortable, go back to the sit down station..... I think this would be an awesome setup... a drafting table is the closest thing I can think of to what I'm looking for, but I don;t necessarily want the surface tilted... (gotta put a screen on it still ya know) but maybe just some kinda regular ol' table with really tall expansion legs would work..... but I have no clue where to begin looking for one of those....

I did check out Ikea, but I didn't see anything like that.... :(

Sounds like you may have to build something...? Kitchen countertop and some legs. I worked at a place that had a decent setup like that, but it was sitting height.

well, as a reference, I have 2 bars in here.... a regular bar and a standing bar. The standing bar surface is exactly 47" inches off the floor and it's perfect.... screen would be almost eye level (I could raise it up somehow if need be) but the height is right..... I'm definately no Tim The Tool Man, so I don't know about building something.... but maybe I could hire a handyman to build some kinda platform to raise up somethiing like this if the surface would pivot back to 0 degrees....

-=HOAX=- 05-22-2002 10:29 AM

Funny you say that AMP...I used to draw comics and shit and I did so standing up...

My first computer replaced the space on my drafting table and all i had was a drafting stool (which I never used much) I used to stand at the computer for a few hours at a time...mostly drawing on a wacom tablet. It was never the 8 to 10 hour stretch's like now, but it was substantial time.

Now if I were to do it I'd recommend a tall drafting stool with arm rests for long periods of typing...that's what always killed me...It forced me to take breaks to...and when I did it felt relaxing...not like now when I sit I feel cramped and a lil tense...not like i'm taking a load off.

A 10 hour stretch at a standing work station will definitely feel like a days work for sure...and unless you have a traditional lazy station to go with it I bet you spend less time at gfy...

don't really do alot of typing.... mostly mouse work... but yeah.... that's exactly what I got here too. I feel cramped and uncomfortable in this damn chair.

precisely the point. Less screwing around and more work. :thumbsup

Amputate Your Head 05-22-2002 10:34 AM

well -=HOAX=-, since you said you had one, you think a drafting table would work fine for what I'm looking to do?

FATPad 05-22-2002 10:46 AM

Pack up your comp every morning. Take it to your local bar. You can not only work while standing at the bar, you can drink all day, too.

Not that you couldn't drink at your house, too.

Hurm...this sounded a lot better in my head.

Damn, why don't you just put your computer on your bar then? That is actually a pretty cool idea. I was bartending at a place up the road about a year ago, part time, and I could just not handle it because there was no fucking computer behind the bar. If I could surf the net inbetween slinging drinks, that would have been the sweetest job.

I can see my future set up now..... big padded vinyl bar, matching stool, and my computer. What better way to get lots of work done. And one of those little fridges right under me. MMM sounds nice.

I foresee some margaritas in my schedule today. Are ya with me, Fletch? hehe

Amputate Your Head 05-22-2002 11:38 AM

the bar is built in...... can't take it with me. :(

Amp, IKEA has a desk called weirdly enough "Jerker" and it is modular and can be made standing up. I think its 56 inches ....It kicks total ass, even for Ikea ;) 129 bucks, Im sure they deliver and it comes with tools buddy!

The height is perfect.

Cherry hell yeah lets get margaritas baby... call me.

Fletch XXX 05-22-2002 11:45 AM

heres a synth on one, although its not set up for standing, you can easily slide the table height up and adjust it all, modular is good...

Beastiepoo 05-22-2002 11:48 AM

Ikea has got to be the way to go. Not only do they do tall desks but also make them modular so you can build a desk/workstation to your spec.

Not sure, I dont think so,... Ikea doesnt have info on it on their site, but its at the store ;)

yeah modular is the way to go man, you can just keep adding hehehe... or actually build your desk to suit YOU instead of some Japanese draftsmen or isnt Ikea the Swedes? hehehe Seriously no prejudice or stereotypes here just wanking on Ikea hehehe
