How can you check a sites traffic?

Ok, so I've had a text link rotation on a site for a few weeks now that has been bringing in a lot of traffic for my sites. The link cost me $130 for a month, 30 gallery links. They claim 30-60,000 visits a day.

Recently, I bought thumbnail links on two sites for $300 a month. They claim their two sites combined get 300,000 visits a day, yet I'm not even getting a 3rd of the traffic I am with the other sites.

I smell bullshit and I want to find out if the sites get the traffic they claim but alexa wont come up for me and I'm not aware of any other tools..

do they have a toplist on the sites?

It can give you an idea about the traffic.

Alexa only really works for people who have installed the Alexa toolbar. It's not an absolutely realistic figure, although it's entirely possible they're guessing the percentage of people on the planet who have installed their software and then multiplying by that.

The absolute truth is it's impossible to tell another site's traffic load without having access to their own logs, or the logs of their ISP. Alexa is better than nothing, however.

Babsy,

You're correct, but Alexa has it's toolbar on enough machines that it can predict accurately within a 95% confidence interval (stats talk, sorry) that the numbers are correct. It's kind of like the election polling statistics. They don't poll the whole country, just enough to make their results statistically accurate.

In one given day, variations could cause it to over or under-report numbers, but if you look at weekly/monthly averages it should be a representative number.

Alexa is the way to check the traffic for a specific site, but also you can add a tracking code at the end of your galleries to know how much traffic exactly you received from them.... Try http://www.statcounter.com.. It`s easy to use and give you very realistic traffic statistics.... :thumbsup

My first thought. It's also the reason I only buy traffic from certain sources.

That is absolute bullshit. Alexa get's my numbers wrong as in WAY Wrong all the time.

pussyluver 05-25-2006 08:31 AM

The best you can do really is to count the impressions on your own galleries and banners (host the banners). There are a number of ways to get that done. You could use a third party such as sex tracker or apply your own php or javascript counter. You could also buy a statistical package.
