I saw it 26 years ago or more, and I'll never forget it. I suppose it's a cult classic.

We watched that in our Film Analysis class when I was in college. That was about 8 or 9 years ago and I will never forget that movie. Our teacher said it had been banned for years and I can see why. That ending definitely gets your attention...

Kind of reminds me of the U2 video for "All I want is you." Love that song.....

I wanted to like some of the characters in that more, but I still enjoy a drunken chant of One of us, one of us . . .

This is a great movie - especially considering the times... but catch the unedited version.
Freaks was banned outright originally and released in a severely truncated (pun intended) version that makes vitually no sense. It's radical because they used actual "freaks" for the movie, and hardly no makeup (except for a lon chaney sequence near the end)... and the resulting images were sometimes and still are nightmarish. Catch it for sure... The guy who made this flick, Tod Browning, was sometimes notoriouslly static in his set up but that could have been because of cumbersome cameras etc... but he sometimes took "real" stuff for atmosphere in almost documentary style - like the spiders he cut into "Dracula" (yes the Bela Lugosi version) - that invariably add to the atmosphere and creepiness of the whole thing. For the young'uns: no CG monsters, sorry. :D (don't get me started I love this stuff) |

Great flick. I've got a book called "Very Special People" that bios the lives of a lot of the actors in that movie - and a lot of other famous "freaks", as well.
Related: If you liked the movie, you might also want to check out the interactive pc "games" The Resident's Bad Day on The Midway (review) & Freak Show. They're over 10 years old, but still pretty heavy stuff. |
