1 in 136 Americans is behind bars
Government report says the increase is due, in part, to the rising number of unconvicted inmates.
By Elizabeth White
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Prisons and jails added more than 1,000 inmates each week for a year, putting almost 2.2 million people, or one in every 136 U.S. residents, behind bars by last summer.

that article says black males 25-29... 1 in 10 did time!?

I assume that figure includes people coming in for a 1 night stay.... holding time and transfers double up.... not 1,000 new unique people every week.

d00t 05-23-2006 12:16 PM

happy 3100 to me

sweetME 05-23-2006 12:22 PM

I love dogs :)

More Booze 05-23-2006 12:23 PM

The racial makeup of inmates changed little in recent years, Beck said. In the 25-29 age group, an estimated 11.9 percent of black men were in prison or jails, compared with 3.9 percent of Latino males and 1.7 percent of white males.

:/

No it's in in 10 are CURRENTLY in jail or prison as we speak. Actually it's almost 1 in 8 for black males between 25-29. Last time I checked most hispanics don't have it any better than blacks but have 1/3 the incarceration rate. Hmmmmmmmm.

Sure would :)

This bit, assuming the stats are correct, is a joke, irrespective of the reasons, excuses or whatevers:

The report found that 62 percent of people in jails have not been convicted
Suppose it's kinda like Gitmo :pimp

milambur 05-23-2006 02:12 PM

That's all fine and dandy, until someone you love is a victim of violent crime. I bet you'd want who did it kept in jail pending their trial.

JD 05-23-2006 02:16 PM

damn....i guess they're really stepping up on the enforcement of DWB's

Pornwolf 05-23-2006 02:37 PM

So according to the latest census black people account for around 50% of the US prison population.

I know black people have some issues in the US but are they really responsible for 50% of the crime in the country?

LOL it's funny that you mention this. I had it with an ARE and then took a look at the article. It had it with an IS. So I changed it! LOL look what I got for going with the "professional".

:)

The professional got it right.

1 in 10 is
=
1 person in every 10 persons is
=
in every 10 persons, 1 person is

"1 person are" does not quite sound right, does it?

Why do I even bother posting, you always seem to beat me to the punch. And you ARE correct as IS the professional.

Anyway I say lock them up and throw away the key! Even if they aren't convicted thay probably did SOMETHING.

Sure.. ya don't let assholes walk the streets if they are a potential danger to the public - same with idiots who are loose cannons and can cause enormous problems to many people if they are walking or people likely to abscond.

The point was really that there is obviously some problem when 62% of the jail population have never been convicted. Dunno.. but it's either a reflection on the court system or lackings elsewhere. Sure as hell that percentage of untried jail cell occupants are not violent offenders or likely to cause extensive damage.

The flip side is the numbers of actual violent convicted offenders who escape jails is a joke. The rap sheets of some these guys is a horror story spanning many years. Got a friend with a list of five to locate and arrest now - only started about 9 days ago and got four of the five back in custody already - and only one to find now and only injury so far is a minor cut. Maybe this time they can be kept in a more secure cell and save a lot of hassle.

Screaming 05-23-2006 03:38 PM

that is tough to take

See that is what I thought is that it didn't quite sound right, but then I got to second guessing myself. Thus the reason I looked at the professional;)

Oh well, I am just a country girl. What do I know? LOL
