International Tatoo Expo - My newest ink + more pics
 

International Tattoo Expo Merida, Yucatan, Mexico May 20-21, 2006

I already posted a few pics yesterday but here's what I gathered, had room to store and save. Artists from all over the world, Russia, Bulgaria and Denmark etc, including a couple from USA and of course many from Mexico. Many styles shown from conventional machine to ancient hand created tats, scarification and burning.

Here's my tat done by good friend and world renowned Pedro Alvarez, Neo Azteca Tattoo. This is the second tat done for me by Pedro, he's staying with me for 2 weeks working in one of my extra rooms as a studio, then going on to Los Cabos for 2 weeks, then Barcelona, New York, Toronto and then back to Cancun. Originally from Mexico City, studies heavily in the ancient symbolism of the Aztec and Mayan Cultures. This tat was done for the competition which we didn't win, but it was designed by Pedro and I for almost a year of planning and wasn't done to "win", it was done as a planned piece. The judges liked the bigger pieces more of course with lots of details.

Chick with a hard to see razor scarification and leg tats who found some reason to follow me around all night and get her picture taken with me. ?? I didn't get all here tats, she had more: (I was short on memory and didn't bring my laptop to download the camera)

Cut and peel scarification. This was cut 1/4" wide and peeled out, different than a normal razor scarification = 4 hours of work; + 2 pics of their other work, Teflon Penis implants and razor scarification:

Marcus' family has money and last year he was kidnapped at automatic gunpoint and held and beaten for a week while blindfolded until he was released after payment. Sad story, it's a busines down here :(

This art was done at the party, Friday night before the expo. They just put up blank pieces and each artist took turns with their style, whatever, pencil, charcoal... they were auctioned off at the end of the show and the procedes donated to a children's charity. Strangly, the first piece shown was brought to me for my signature, although I'm not an artist and I told the guy I didn't draw it. He said he wanted me to sign it anyhow, I dunno why ??

PS, some of the art that was auctioned off had signatures by artists, those signatures really shouldn't have been there because it was supposed to be selfless work done as compilations.

Can someone explain the suspension thing? I don't get it at all, either how it's possible (can a hook passed through that little amount of skin support your body weight without ripping it out?) or why people do it / enjoy it...

Actually, I went to sleep 4 times during the work. I kept waking up when ppl were standing over me taking pics. I think I had my pic taken over 200 times at that show, but then everyone was taking pics. I was running out of memory so I trimmed it down to mostly just my friends.

I saw him the second day and talked to him, he said it hurt like hell the second day and it was worse when he was getting it.

The WORSE part was that he needed some more small work done on it in some places the second day. I'm sure that was excruciating, he didn't even make a face and I don't think he was high, he didn't look high.

It sort of releases endorphins or something. Like twitching a horse.

My daughter (and I) have several piercings and stretched gauges, I started one set of piercings with a 2 gauge .. but come try to give either one of us a shot.. it's weird..

I don't know the physics behind it but the piercing hurts when they put in the hooks.

The actual suspension does not hurt according to the ppl suspended.

The one guy that's now my friend, I saw him yesterday at a goth store he owns in the mall and he barely has any marks at all, no bruising whatsoever.

He told me the worst part is after the hooks come out, because your skin fills up with air pockets and they have to massage them out.

The other guy you see in the pics with the dreds is kind of a pagan/shaman sort of and he was doing the purification rituals with incense and items he made. I explained my wife and daughter's religion to him and asked him if I could buy some of the incense he made, he told me it was against his belief to sell it but he gave us 2 very sizable portions of 2 different incenses he made ;)

awesome pics. suspension fucks with me though. kinda makes me feel sick to see it.

I am a scientist by nature (and profession) so I'm always looking for the answer and I was intrigued, coupled with the fact that the sight of blood doesn't bother me unless it's my own.

I think the answer to the suspension question is people do it to show that they can.

I think that the suspension itself doesn't hurt because the weight is distributed evenly across a certain square inch area (PSI if you will) and not because of putting ones self in some sort of mental state.

I further this idea because I was talking with the guy (who is now my friend with the goth shop in the mall) getting the tattoo, stopped and wrapped the tattoo, got the hooks installed and was suspended, unhooked and started visiting with me again.

At no time was I under the impression that he was meditating or in any kind of trance and I know for a fact he was not under the influence of any drugs because I offered him Xanax during his tattoo session and he refused because he was getting the suspension done and wanted to have a clear mind.

He's just a normal person who wanted to try it, no stunts, no training or mental prep that I'm aware of.

yeah ive known people that have done suspension and they say its not overly painful and can actually be quite a rush (endorphins).

i just meant that when i actually see someone getting suspended, it kind of grosses me out. especially when its from anywhere other than the back. the knee suspension REALLY grosses me out.

love the suspension pics.. one of these days I'm going to go up myself.. if it's anything like piercings it's that enourmous rush of brain goodies without the drugs. I think everyone has their own reasons and walks away with something a little different..

those are great tattoos but I hate to have it...

For me, it has everything to do with how the person being suspended appears to feel about it. If they seem really into it, then I like it. If they seem like they are miserable, then it bothers me.

It bothers me to see people in pain. I have had my share of physical trauma and it bothers me too.

This is the first suspension I've ever seen live and all 3 participants seemed totally at peace about the idea.

Used to live there and was amazed at some of the stuff that used to get done at the show.. shame it's not on this year.
