Network specialists, I'm seeking for help

Is it possible to simulate a LAN for two computers, that actually aren't on a LAN ? Sounds confusing, I know ...

The problem is that I would like to play "Tribes 2" with a friend of mine, but the stupid warez version won't let me upgrade the old files and thus I can't log on to the internet servers. Nevertheless the LAN game option works, but since we're not in the same network, we can't see each other's open LAN games.

So, is there some way to have one computer log into the other machine over TCP/IP so that we can take advantage of the LAN option ?

Thanks ! :thumbsup

P.S. No, I am not going to go to the store to buy the full version :winkwink:

Tell me about your internet connection...are you behind some sort of cable or DSL router? Do you have a "real" routable IP address (i.e., not 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x)?

Nah!

It's all in the tunnel. Go get yourself some ssh2 software (vandyke.com secureCRT) and open connections to each others boxes. You can then tunnel any traffic you like across it with a bit of setup. I'm almost certain there are dedicated utilities for this kind of thing out there. This is pretty much a VPN problem.

Hell of a lot of hassle for a game of tribes though. Go and buy it.

Nah!

for even that at least one of them needs a routable IP address for one to connect to the other

if he's running DHCP and/or NAT and he's getting a APIPA number, how is the other one going to find the other computer on the internet? he can't.

Your post said 'You' ie. the person with the problem, not the friend. Obviously somebody has to have the ability to accept a connection. Actually that's dangerous talk on this board : )

Any looney who does this for a game of tribes needs their head examined anyway (blush).
