Studies show cost of gasoline near level that will limit Americans' travel

Fuel prices are nearing a "tipping point" that could deter Americans from taking summer vacations, the head of one of the nation's largest travel trade groups said Thursday.

"I am concerned about a number of economic indicators with gasoline prices and the pocket-book impact they're having," said Suzanne Cook, senior vice president of research for the Travel Industry Association of America.

"We've had gasoline prices jump up for the summer travel season before and (we've) weathered it. But there are additional factors to be considered this year," Cook said, citing the power of price increases in fuel to undermine consumer confidence and economic growth.

Have the gas prices changed any of your vacation plans?

Pete-KT 05-19-2006 09:30 AM

who cares either way you have to get to and from work and be able to go out and do stuff, we can bitch all we want but in the end you gotta pay for the gas

Dont complain about gas prices if you drink bottled water - you are paying around 7 bucks a gallon for bottled water

CyberHustler 05-19-2006 09:31 AM

wwwwwooooooooaaaa, you don't say?

RhiannonAPM 05-19-2006 10:01 AM

I am not bitching about the prices. All I am asking is if they are making you change your mind about your summer vacations and all. I know there is nothing I or anyone else can do about the rise of the gas prices.

Yeah, but it doesn't take me a couple gallons of water to get to the office ;-)

Also, remember this, gas prices affect the costs of other proudcts too. The more it costs to ship things, the higher the prices go. Or maybe we should demand George W hold a townhall meeting on bottled water prices ;-)

I would reconsider a long road trip, yes.

I dont understand comparing the price of gas to water, or milk, or printer ink. When a car can run on gasoline, water, milk or printer ink, then it's a fair comparison though :)

well it has to go down in price sometime.... :(

True, But they are talking about the people that would normally drive a 1k or more trip for vacation. Spending a ton on gas. this year, most of them will stay home.

Screaming 05-19-2006 11:03 AM

you dont mind droppin the cash in the tank when you are going to the beach.. its the drive to work daily that you bitch about.

Kevsh 05-19-2006 11:08 AM
