Been a long time since I've been there, but... There are ruins not too far from Cancun, you can rent a car and spend the day there. In what they call "downtown" they have outdoor shows that are quite interesting and it's all free. Also the "flea market", where you can get you some pretty decent buys if you bargain right. :)
There are a lot of activities to do on the beach, and prices used to vary according to the hotel where you are staying. Some are free with your vacation package, some are not. Across there's the island of Belize and you can fly there for the day or overnight, I don't remember. Iguanas go about freely like cats and dogs here, they walk on the sidewalks with you and hide in the ditches. When one appears out of nowhere at night, it's scary the first time when you don't know what it is! lol Same thing with lizards. If your hotel has rooms right on the beach and it's not an "inside" hotel with an elevator, odds are that you'll find at least one lizard in your room during your stay. Stay away from the water, I mean don't drink it right from the tap. If you like salsa, hot there means FRIGGIN BURNING HOT. Way past what we call fireball here. Your eyes will cry, your nose will run and your mouth will burn a long time. We ate breakfast at Dennys a lot because we kinda knew what we were ordering. If servers don't speak English well, and it happened a lot, what you ordered and what you got were not always the same thing. It's easier to just keep it and hope for the best than it is to try to explain that whatever they gave you is not what you ordered. They might take it back and bring you something else that you still didn't order. That happened too. lol And you'll come across this problem at "good" places too. However, hotel staff are really good in almost every hotel there, but you don't want to spend your whole vacation at the hotel either. If you have US money, they'll love you. If you have pesos, they'll treat you like any other Mexican. Hope you have a great time! Missie |

I went to Cancun with the wifey 2 years ago, it wasn't too bad. I'm sure it would've been better if we had a crew of people to live it up.
As far as fun things to do, my wife and I did the Xel-Ha http://www.xel-ha.com/ Tulum http://www.locogringo.com/past_spotlights/aug2002.html tour where you go to the park for a couple of hours, then go to the ruins for a few hours. It was a LOT of fun. The only thing is that we with we had more time at Xel-Ha because it was a lot of fun snorkeling and exploring. There is another place like that that we didn't get a chance to go to Xcaret http://www.xcaret.com/ which is along the same lines as Xel-Ha, so I'm sure that'd be fun to :) Another thing that we enjoyed was the Booze Cruise. They put you on a boat, drive ya over to a private beach resort where they feed you, entertain you, and give you as much as you can drink. They were VERY hospitable when we were there, they waited on us hand and foot, bringing us as much booze and we could take, ha ha ha. We also joined up with a group of people and that made it more fun :) As far as the bad things about Cancun, first of all, it's a pain in the ass trying to walk somewhere along the hotel strip because there's people every so often that'll hit you up to take one of their hotel tours for free tickets or meals. I guess you can't really avoid that if walking, but I just figured I'd let ya know, ha ha. Next up, is the flea market area, you should avoid that area because it's fucking annoying as hell. When you first get up to it, you think "I'll check out this store", well, you walk in there and NOTHING is priced and the store people hover over you, anything you pick up and show interest in, the price they give you is waaaay overpriced. Heck, in one store, my wife picked up 2 very cheap looking bracelets and a hair clip and the guy pulled out his calculator and said "$165". We said "fuck that", so he came down to $130, then $100, then $80, then $60, then eventually as we were walking out the door, he sold them to us for $35 !! As soon as you walk out of one store at the flea market, there's another person sitting outside the next shop persistantly coaxing you in. Then it seems that every store has the same stuff which makes it even more horrible. One other funny thing is that in 4 of the first 8 shops we stopped in, they offered to sell me some weed, I was like WTF ?!?! ha ha ha. If you want some cheap souvenieers (however you spell it), there is like an outlet store on the main drag, it's a huge store that has everything at low prices and best of all, it's all priced !! ha ha ha. |
