PPC or SEO

If you have a limited amount of time to do one or the other, what do you put your time and/or $$$ into?

I've been doing PPC since it was invented, and made a ton of money with sex toys and PPC. But when I try to promote porn on PPC the ROI is very small.
I've never had much luck getting golden natural listings with porn or toys, but I've had a few that brought in some traffic.

Which do you think is a better use of time, PPC or SEO?

Dagwolf 05-18-2006 11:17 AM

Depends, obviously.

PPC = requires common sense
SEO = requires skills

darksoul 05-18-2006 11:30 AM

if you have enough time and patience seo will payoff at the end
because it will be free traffic.
I like to do a mix of both.

I think PPC requires a bit more than common sense. I only know two, maybe three people in our industry that have made millions with it.

shermo 05-18-2006 11:36 AM

I choose SEO. I'm not a guru or anything, but generally I can produce results without much work, and I am able to move on to the next task. :)

It seems to me like most people lose money on PPC if they try spending more than a few bucks a day.

This thread was supposed compare the two in that respect.

King Adam 05-18-2006 11:49 AM

SEO takes time ... but in the end I think it has more value.

jrap 05-18-2006 11:58 AM

WiredGuy 05-18-2006 12:02 PM

Both really. I like PPC because you can take a few minutes once you have a sense of it and see an ad running in many cases. I like SEO because it's free and again, once you have a sense of the current state of the SE you work with, you can duplicate tactics and have a fair shot at another market or two.

Bhelliom 05-18-2006 12:51 PM

There are other methods of getting SE traffic cheaper than the normal PPC things like google adwords and yahoo sponsored search. For a much cheaper PPC cost (8 cents a click adult sites, 3 for tgp) you Can get very very good search engine rankings that have a much lower CPA than doing it through sponsored search or adwords.

SEO is very useful, but can be more useful when you use it in conjunction with a great PPC campaign. Check out our site. ExpressSubmit.net for a cheap and easy way to take care of both your SEO and get very very good rankings in Search engines

bdld 05-18-2006 02:28 PM

i've been doing both for 6+ years and counting, and PPC has made me more money and taken less time overall. however it's not quite as fulfilling career-wise compared to seo.

ez12 05-18-2006 02:45 PM

SEO makes me feel smart:thumbsup

:upsidedow PPC makes me feel like a cambler

Furious_Male 05-18-2006 03:29 PM

The guys that said both I agree with.

A good blend of both will give you the best returns. There is a great blurb in Website Services magazine this month about the two.

Today's SEO = Generate inbound links (preferably relevant but not necessary). It requires money and ways to link back from other sites more than anything.

camuseeme 05-18-2006 03:42 PM

I do well on ppc and I still suck at seo, but learning:2 cents:

madawgz 05-18-2006 09:07 PM

SEO is wayyyy to fucking hard lol

pr0phet 05-18-2006 09:11 PM

Depends on alot of things

PPC pros:
*instant results
*more stable then SEO (dont depend on an ever changing algorithm)
*takes little work

PPC cons:
*need a bankroll to make real $
*easy as hell to emulate your sucess

SEO pros
*cheaper
*harder to emulate

SEO cons
*Takes forever
*you can lose all your traffic in one update

$5 submissions 05-18-2006 09:57 PM

Why not try both.

Kinky John 05-19-2006 05:12 AM

Depends on what your goals are and if you can afford to re-invest most if not all your profit back into you PPC campaigns until you reach your goals. Also depnds on when sponsors pay you. Obviously if you are using sponsors that pay monthly your bankroll will have to be higher than one that pays weekly assuming you are going to spend the same amount of money each week promoting each one.

Nice analisis :helpme

Wiggles 05-19-2006 06:19 AM

with ppc you need to be very specific, you cannot really go for broad topics like with SEO. I do great with adwords for porn but i have a very specific terms so it helps alot, i tried some more generic terms and they suck ass!

Nicky 05-19-2006 06:42 AM

It's all about going niche :)

hqxpics 05-19-2006 06:46 AM

PPC works faster, - we have to find an appropriate service, read more about not fair.

It's not an either or, both have their place...

SEO should be part of your ongoing marketing campaign, for the long-run. It does take time, but the rewards far outway PPC. Use PPC for the short-run to fill the traffic gap while waiting for your SEO efforts to kick in. Just repeat the process for each niche you're trying to target.

Good advise, Sun Tzu. BTW, that's an awesome book you wrote! :winkwink: :winkwink: Seriously though, the ART OF WAR is extremely relevant in online marketing as it with other activities that involve conflict and competition.
