For the idiots out there : Firefox is nowhere close to 25 % of the marketshare

Ok you seen it somewhere ... and you are quoting an url you didn't bother reading... just read up at the bottom of the table :
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
Quote:

Why so high Firefox figures?

W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers.

These facts indicate that the browser figures below are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.

Anyway, our data, collected over a five year period, clearly shows the long and medium-term trends.
For thoses who have websites out there, most server side stats programs and even external counters have browser stats. You might wanna look at them and realise (unless you have neard or webmaster traffic) that mozilla (firefox incl) will be arround 3-10 %.

Sadly, there aren't 25 % of internet savy people out there... if there would be, ransomware programs wouldn't exist.

Libertine 05-17-2006 08:35 PM

15% in western europe, 5-10% in northern america.

NoWhErE 05-17-2006 08:37 PM

I get about 50k hits per day to my galleries and 15% of the surfers use Firefox.

Thats what my stats tell me.

Martin3 05-17-2006 08:57 PM

70-75% IE
15-20% Firefox
Opera, Safari, Netscape the next 3 with about 2-4% each

Average on all my sites

Hotrocket 05-17-2006 08:58 PM

My stats show about the same... 14%

JD 05-17-2006 09:00 PM

like i said in the thread I posted that in:

The exact percentage is going to vary from one site to another. Fact of the matter remains, there are a considerable amount of surfers using Firefox nowadays.

Even if it's only 5% and you're sending out 10K hits a day, that's 500 of your hits.

Tempest 05-17-2006 09:05 PM

18% on one site..
On another, the stats lump FF in with netscape and that stat is at 30%

for my stats, around 15% use mozilla

Pornwolf 05-17-2006 09:43 PM

I saw Engadget's stats and it had around 37% of it's users using Firefox. It also had a much higher Mac/Safari user number as well.

dial 05-17-2006 09:56 PM

you also have to take into account when saying shit like this....does the site in question tell people to switcj to firefox? because a lot of idiots put those "get firefox" links up on their site, and of course they are going to have more users using firefox

variables, what are variables...are you kidding me, you mean you have to consider there might be other issues in looking at stats like these, there is no one standard answer for everything?

:thumbsup

Matt 26z 05-17-2006 10:29 PM

Anyone with high FF numbers on an adult site has a large amount of non-American traffic. If the numbers are really high, you've probably got a lot of east Europe and beyond traffic.

100% American traffic will report low FF usage.

Abyss_Vee 05-17-2006 10:33 PM

its been 25% all year

hahaha..no shit man

sometimes the intelligence level of GFY is insanely low, I should learn to dumb down my posts more

Dang, sad people are starting to use Firefox, so much easier to build websites for just a single browser. Admitingly Firefox is very nice and I use it myself for some of its advanced features but building websites for 2 browsers is just more work.

I do 3... IE, firefox and Opera.. I also check netscape sometimes.. it becomes second nature after awhile as there's just a few differences and once you get those down, checking your sites in the browsers just takes a few seconds.

huh? Professional webmasters always build pages so that they load correctly in both firefox and IE. I've been doing that since netscape 3.0 and IE 4.

Agreed with HTML however trying to get CSS to play nice with both is tough.

Not if you use 'real' css, and not that fancy stuff IE calls css. :)

KRL 05-18-2006 01:47 AM

Here's the stats on one of my mainstream music sites:

MS Internet Explorer 462481 48.6 %
Firefox 380258 39.9 %
Safari 73903 7.7 %

This is the first time I've seen IE dip below 50%. Firefox is at 40% consistently.

So you're way off according to my observations Dre.

Get Firefox now!

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Also for a great free full feature alternative to MS Office, get Sun Microsystems Open Office 2.02!

JD 05-18-2006 07:36 AM

so...um....Dre who looks stupid now?

um...no offense dude, but I have been designing sites since I was 18, 13 years now...and there was NEVER a time when I didn't check a design in multiple browsers

Netscape, Opera, IE.....and now firefox

just the way of the game

i was gonna say maybe 7- 9%

nico-t 05-18-2006 08:48 AM

the point was in that thread that they redirect your traffic.. whether its 25% or 14% (my sites), that still doesnt make it right.

Yeah it is pal, but nature of this business. You have to consider other browsers now a day, and that's the fact of the matter.
