Does anyone know the theory behind the old adage "Don't mix your drinks!"

I've always mixed wine with beer, wine with spirits, beer with spirits and never got anything more than a normal drunken buzz. What is having more than one sort of alcohol in the space of a few hours supposed to do to a person?

All it did to me when I was drinking,,, was got me drunk... Nothing special.... Might make some people sick.... or give them a Diff. kind of hangover...
