Your mainstream background is pretty strong, so that would be like a reminder. If you put the same effort and money in an adult co. and in a good selected non-adult one you'll end up with much higher profits in the 2nd case. You won't have to adapt all the time to at least maintain your status and you can determine easier your growth rates since you won't depend on 3rd parties like affiliates (even partially).

Why not take advantage of the best of both worlds?

I agree totally. I've been doing mainstream for about 8 months now, while the money is great (and ROI is much better than adult), these people are some of the most boring people I've ever met, lol. I'll take their money, but I'll stay in adult too :)
