I found a Coral Snake under the deck at my house today...

God I hate snakes, especially venomous ones, so I had to take its head off. I guess it's getting to be that time of the year around here :disgust . Oh well, at least I still haven't seen any copperheads or rattlers... yet.

Mr Pheer 05-12-2006 05:46 PM

coral snakes are extremely rare... you sure it wasnt a king snake?

wdsguy 05-12-2006 05:46 PM

any pics?

Spunky 05-12-2006 05:46 PM

That would freak me right out..damn

Fizzgig 05-12-2006 05:46 PM

I don't suppose I want to see a picture now that you've removed its head.
:repuke:

Oh yeah, I'm sure, red on yellow. Unfortunately, we have more than enough of them down here.

minusonebit 05-12-2006 05:48 PM

This thread is useless without pics.

gangbangjoe 05-12-2006 05:49 PM

No, it didn't occur to me at the time. I can probably go snap a few before it gets dark.

Mr Pheer 05-12-2006 05:50 PM

When I lived in Texas I'd find several copperheads or water mocasins around my house every year, I lived right on a private lake in a wooded area.

pocketkangaroo 05-12-2006 05:51 PM

Damn, that would sure not be a way to start the day. I will say though that coral snakes look really cool. How did you catch him?

Sparks 05-12-2006 05:58 PM

Ah man, I hate snakes. Lot's of rattlers and Bullsnakes at our ranch in Montana. I've only seen a few, but man I hate those things. Can't imagine coming up on a Coral snake.

Mr.Right - Banned For Life 05-12-2006 06:03 PM

snakes freak me out.

EdgeXXX 05-12-2006 06:35 PM

Yeah, it definitely startled the hell outta me, I had to do a double take to verify that it really was a coral. I probably would have let it live (maybe) but we have 2 cats (one of which is mainly an indoor cat and curious by nature) that were outside at the time and I didn't want them getting bitten. As far as "how I caught it", the answer would be: with a machette. :winkwink:

edit: my first instinct was to grab one of the 12-gauges, but I figured I might give the neighbors a heart attack. :1orglaugh

Guitar Riff 05-13-2006 08:05 AM

About three species of coral snakes are found in the United States. All are small, brightly colored snakes. The venom is neurotoxic and attacks the nervous system. Coral snakes have small grooved fangs which are permanently erect. They usually hang on after biting. Coral snake antivenom is produced for these species in this country.
The Arizona Coral snake (Micruroides) is found only in the Southwestern United States. The venom appears very toxic. The bites are very rare and there is no antivenom for this species.

good thing ya didnt wait to kill it

LOL

I wouldn't really call it a village; Austin has a population of over 1 million. But, I do live in the hill country out at the lake (Lake Travis) and the prices out here tend to be increased, so there are less people out here which means there is also a lot more wildlife around.

EdgeXXX 05-13-2006 08:10 AM

Here is a pic of a Texas Coral snake:

One of my cats was getting curious about it and starting to get close to it. I didn't want to take a chance on the snake striking and killing her.

CaptainWolfy 05-13-2006 09:51 AM

blah i hate snakes!

Well, as far as venomous snakes we have Coral snakes, Copperheads, Water Moccasins, and Diamondback Rattlesnakes. We also have scorpions, giant poisonous centipedes, wolves, coyotes, bats, Black Widows, Brown Recluses, Tarantulas, etc. We also have the "cute" stuff like deer, rabbits, foxes, raccons, etc. We got all types of wildlife out here. :thumbsup
