In today's world, unfortunately, you have to operate under the assumption that everything you do in electronic communications can be monitored.

If you think the US is the only one doing this, its even worse in other countries.

Basically its safe to assume no matter where you are in the world, someone may be listening or watching you.

Sad, but that's the reality.

I'm sure there will be some massive class action lawsuits against the Telco's eventually on this matter. And they did apparently ignore the law and decided to just sidestep FISA, knowing it would never fly in the court's eyes.

UK have stuff like the regulation of investigatory powers act which is pretty crazy aswell.. but echelon led to the arrest of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in pakistan though so atleast its doing something good..

funny to read that the eu has decided (is it finished?) to develop communication based on quantum cryptography ... the SECOQC project ... a system that would theoretically be unbreakable by echelon or any other espionage system...
