and i called my house with a cellphone and it goes straight to the answering machine |
is there another phone in your house that may be off the hook?
|
sounds like a no dial tone situation for that instrument . . . have you tried plugging into a different jack?
I am guessing it is a multi-line phone (2 at least) and you have no dial tone coming to that jack on that line |
The call is coming from inside the house

You have a short on that line then. Now you need to find out if the short is onside or out . . . . unplug all phones and call the number, if it goes straight to the answer machine . . you have a short. However, let's clear this up first . . . when you say answer machine, do you mean voice mail, or do you really have an answering machine? |

Well, you are the one that called it an answer machine, not me . . . anyway, with 30+ years experience in telefony trouble shooting I can assure you that you definitely have a short on that line. A phone being off the hook puts a short on the line, so if you unplug everything . . . phones, modems, whatever . . from ALL phone jacks and it goes straight to VoiceMail (VMS), you have a short. Now, on the outside of your house should be a box that the phone lines come to. There should be a small connector that looks like a phone cord that you would plug into your jack. Unplug them (going on the presumption that you have 2 lines, and easier to unplug all that to try and teach you how to determine which is for line 1 and which is line 2). Call your number again. If it does not go straight to VMS then the trouble is inside your house. If it still goes straight to VMS the trouble is outside and you will need to call the phone company to fix it. |

so did you figure out the problem yet?
and with the two line issue, isn't the first line the green and red wires while line 2 is the black and yellow wires? |
Quote:
Yes . . . if you have old wiring with that color code system in place. It could also be blue/white for 1 and orange/white for 2. Or, if at some time in the past line 1 was put on the second pair, and line two had to be put on the first . . . or the 3rd or 4th. |
Cool baddog
Here's to phone phreaks! :) |
i finally fixed the problem, it was a faulty line that had coke spilt on it :\
so i just replaced that line and everything works now :) |
All your phone lines are belong to Coke.
