'Knight Rider' coming to big screen

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) -- The talking car K.I.T.T. is heading to the big screen in an adaptation of the hit 1980s TV series "Knight Rider."

Series creator Glen A. Larson will write and executive produce the Weinstein Co. project, which he anticipates will begin production next year. The project had previously been in development at Sony-based Revolution Studios.

Larson has bandied about the project for years. "A number of people wanted to do a pure comedic send-up of it, but I always felt that would throw away the franchise," he said. "There was always some humor on the show, but this film will probably have more gallows, foxhole humor.

Despite the darker tone, he said he would aim for a PG-13 rating because he doesn't want to exclude the series' core audience. The show ran on NBC from 1982-86.

The story centers on the tale of a police investigator shot in the line of duty who is nursed back to health by a mysterious millionaire. He's given a new name (Michael Knight), a new face and a new car to help him continue his work. As in the pilot, he also seeks revenge on the criminals who left him for dead.

Larson wouldn't say whether David Hasselhoff, who starred in the series, would appear in a cameo or if William Daniels would reprise his role as the voice of K.I.T.T.

Other Larson TV series being developed as film adaptations include "Magnum, P.I." at Imagine Entertainment and "The Fall Guy" at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Great. Another show I never watched when it was on TV that I can now enjoy not watching the cheesy movie of.

no surprises here, Hollywood has been cranking out movie versions of TV shows for years now, look for Miami Vice this year as well LMAO

David Hasselhof IS gonna be Michael Knight.

I think it will suck, however, I think I'm gonna watch it:) I watced every episode when I was a lil kid. I even had NR cars :)

Also the 'new' dukes of hazard was not that bad

I think that since they're actually gonna have Hasselhof in it as Knight, it might be a little better than you'd think.

There was a rumor in one of the movie boards that I was in recently that they offered the lead to Ben Affleck. I really hope he accepts. This would be the final nail in the coffin of this asshole's career. What Daredevil didn't manage to do, this one surely will.

I thought Hasselhoff actually owned the Knight Rider franchise... there was originally talk of bringing it back to TV.

It would be a bit gay if they re-started the entire storyline using Hasselhoff again though.

I hate the idea but I assure you that I will be there with my big hair and pleather jacket.

i loved that show, i still have somewhere in my old parents home the VHS with a few episodes and the movie "Knight Rider 2000"

Hollywood is sooo original....ya can't blame them, stupid people just keep eating it up. I refuse to go to anything that is unoriginal.

Yup, but I think it was just for tv and video release. I'm not sure it ever hit the big screen.

My take is... ya never know. It could do well. It could suck ass. But one thing is for certain, they had better get the original voice for KITT or else I'll be very disappointed.
