any people set up your own DNS?

I'm setting up my own DNS master and slave servers. I'm using Bind 9 something.

Anyone have any advice for setting up the slave server?

I have done it a few times - but to be honest with the combo of CPanel WHM and NameCheap you cant go wrong.

Click the appropiate button in WHM - then click the appropiate button in NameCheap and you are ready to go.

If it involved clicking an extra button I would be totally lost.

i do, what's the problem?

Other than spamming (email, galleries).... why would one want to have their own name server? What benifits are there to it?

SEO
Hosts
Registrars
People who like to have a little control
Did I mention SEO?

I am sure there are a few hundred more reasons.

It's awesome

i suspect you could do everything you want to do with a free dns hosting service like everydns.. but if you really want to do this there are good bind howtos on the web..

you need to allow-transfer for the slave server, and have it get the zones off the master server.. its pretty easy to setup

fris 06-03-2006 01:22 AM

i prefer bind 8.x over bind 9.x but ya it only takes a few mins to set it up once you compile, setup some zones and add to the conf and start the nameserver

ummm.. yeah... several for almost 5 years now.. what's the point? I don't need to run my own name server, the hosting company does it.

Well I can understand registrars and hosts...

What benifits are there for SEO?

What control advantages are there? Right now, I click a few buttons to add a new site to my server(s) and then edit my registrar domain info to point to the host DNS... So what advantages would there be to me running my own nameserver.

I really would like to know because to date, the only people I see doing this are ones that are either doing hosting on the cheap or gallery cheaters. So my perspective is a little limited..
