Do you have a UPS?

I got one a few months back because my new PC seemed to be very sensitive to momentary dips, usually rebooting. The lights just flickered, the UPS beeped... it's saved me. :thumbsup

BTW by "do you have" I mean in the office or at home... not in the equipment rack in the carrier room. :1orglaugh

Never used one. Never had a problem ... knock on wood.

I have over 20 of the 1050VA models in my house alone.

I use them on anything electronic.

Computers
LCD screens
Plasma TV's
Stereo equipment
Switches/Routers

I have lost it all in a single lightning strike, the only stuff that survived was plugged into UPS devices. Now I have them for EVERYTHING.

na, the smaller models are only 3 or 4 times bigger then your regular surge protector.

Yup costco special :)
I love having my router and cable modem on one. power goes out and I can still surf the net, lol.

Oddly enough I have my laptop plugged in through one too.
I think the microwave, fridge, dryer and freezer are the only things not on a UPS.
The freezer drains the small UPS units befor it can even fully turn on.

Oh and on the fishtank I have a big one, hate to have my little fishes die cause the power was out longer then it should.

We dont get much power outage here though, only during electrical storms.

I have a generator and surge protectors - do I still need some UPSs too?

A UPS protects from short term dropouts (like half a second as a substation switches over) and also other problems such as brownouts (voltage wandering below specs). A generator will keep you going for ages, but you still need to start it... in the meantime your comp crashes, or switches off. :Graucho

3 ...'

One for each station, the third one for the modem, router, voip, ....

Well, the computer I use is a laptop so the battery takes over, HOWEVER....more importantly, would it keep me from having to wait 10 minutes for the DirecTV/TiVo to charge back up again? :)

eMonk 05-06-2006 10:02 PM

i love mine. it has saved me from several power-outs.

Cyrano 05-06-2006 10:02 PM

I've got a few APC UPS's around.

KRL 05-06-2006 10:37 PM

On every PC.

:thumbsup

you really need a UPS. It saves you from a lot of headache and money in the long run.

DesignWise 05-06-2006 11:51 PM

it's like a charm....

Well Dunn 05-06-2006 11:54 PM

UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply. So long as it has sufficient battery capacity your equipment will probably never know that the mains power has disappeared. With commercial ops there's usually a UPS to power things for long enough to get the generator going.

When I ran an ISP we sized the UPS for at least 20 mins runtime in the event of a total power failure.

WiredGuy 05-07-2006 08:22 AM

Its amazing how many brown outs people get and you'd only realize it with a UPS or surge protectors. I have 3 in my office, 1 main one and then 2 that connect into the first one (and all my devices branch off the 2 UPS'). This way I have a secondary point of failure in case one UPS fails. And my office building is surge protected in every outlet, so with all this, I'm pretty sure its safe :)

That's the other reason I got the UPS. At the time I was running a RAID5 array and there was some option that provided slightly faster access, but greater risk of recently accessed files becoming corrupted if there was a sudden shutdown. They recommended that it should not be enabled unless the PC was connected to a UPS.

BTW, didn't you have backups? :Oh crap
