Moving to San Diego

Was looking for any and all advice about moving to San Diego. I have never lived there and am moving there in June.

Really any tips on neighborhoods to avoid, I need to rent some storage to put my computers and things until I get a place, and I'm looking for an extended stay place to rent for a week or two until I find an apartment.

Have heard nothing but great things about San Diego and am very excited. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

I got a place in UTC, real simple to get around and a nice neighborhood. I lived in La Jolla for a few years and traffic there sucks getting in and out. Pacific Beach is cool but really young, Downtown is happening right now and you can rent for a good deal since the guys who bought cannot sell their properties. Del Mar is great too if you work from home, otherwise a little bit of traffic.

Hope this helps,
G

my personal fave place is Hillcrest. It is very gay-friendly, so if you can't handle men holding hands, I'd forget that area. But it's a very walking-friendly, easy to get what you need, lots of cool resteraunts/shops kinda area. And a short cab to downtown.

I love north county (Del Mar, Solana Beach), too. But its muuuch quieter.

You need to look in the nice areas of San Diego not the La Jolla, UTC Del Mar ghettos. If you want to be a player you need to move to.... National City, City Heights, Spring Valley, Lincon Acres, Encanto, Shelltown oh yea and the skyline community in Paradise Hills is a very classy place with very affordable rent. :thumbsup

I'm not a player, Im pretty quiet. I really just want to lock myself in a room with my computers and bust my ass.
I do that now, but I want mountains and nice weather when I do go outside lol.

Do you guys know of any extended stay places that let you stay for a few weeks?

Ahaha don't listen to what he said. You don't really want to live in those areas.

I live in San Carlos and I'm looking at a mountain right now from my front bedroom window. San Diego has all sorts of different environments, what exactly are you looking for? Also, there seem to be a lot of open places right now. What you may want to do (I did this when I first moved here) is find some month-to-month place to stay, setup a bed and whatever you need, then shop the city til you find what you really like. I only stayed a month at that place and it ran me about $900, this was about 5 years ago. Yes it was a bit of a headache, but I think you're going to get that no matter what.

Hey Sly
Where did you stay? do you remember?
Im looking on craigslist now for places.

I think the environment Im looking for is city life. Pedestrian. Someplace decent and pretty safe. I like being outside and being around town. I dont need to be close to the beach or anything, just a busy environment and not in a rural area

zigx 05-07-2006 05:12 PM

where are you moving from?

I stayed in City Heights when I first moved here. I wouldn't exactly recommend it to anyone for living, maybe just a quick stop like I did. It isn't a very nice area.

From what you seem to be looking for, I think Hillcrest would be a great place to start. Its a busy area, some great food, tons of shops... if you're into barbecue, check out Phil's Barbecue, you'll love it.

Well, I was 18 at the time, so yes my life has changed a great deal. Partially from moving to "the big city", partially from growing older, and partially from having moderate success. San Diego is a great city to live in, the SoCal area can support just about any interest or hobby you may have. Oceans, mountains, deserts... all within a few short hours.

colpanic 05-07-2006 06:20 PM

Downtown is cool if you don't mind noise. There are a lot of people in adult who live downtown too. I live in the Gaslamp, it's good to be able to walk to everything, if you can handle the noise.

(plus hot girls dressed up)

Downtown is the best place for fun...

sd is a great place to live. i live in university heights. if i was you, unless you wanna be around lots of surfers, college kids and rowdy shit, stay away from pb and mission beach areas... the neighborhoods near downtown are nice- golden, hill, south park,

hillcrest is the gay area, not that there is anything wrong with that.

sd is a great place to live, you won't be let down
