Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant For Not Eating Enough

Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant For Not Eating Enough

DES MOINES, Iowa - Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet. The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.

"They told us we are not welcome there anymore," said Dershem, a repeat customer at the Dragon House buffet. "We waste too much food. But the buffet is all you can eat. And you know kids. They won't always eat everything and they want something else."

Dershem said she paid her $5.95 fee on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.

Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits.

"They just take one bite and throw it away," said cashier Lin Huyen. "They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food."

Dershem said she was shocked by the scolding and complained to management when she paid her check. "It was embarrassing. ... If it's a one-stop buffet, post it," she said.

Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant offers all you can eat buffet, not all you can waste. Dershem's family took food, didn't finish it and then piled on the same food again, he said.

"Shes done that too many times," Cao said. "We would welcome her back if she has respect and knows what she wants."

Bob Oberbillig, an adjunct professor at the Drake Legal Clinic, says the patron would have no legal case against exclusion from a business unless there are other factors such as racial discrimination or mental health issues.

"An establishment can exclude people if they smoke or waste food," he said. "It's still a private business."

what a weird world we life in...

BusterBunny 05-05-2006 01:27 AM

funny but i think it is fucking awsome i like what they did

Sammy4u 05-05-2006 01:40 AM

I know of a few places that are all you can eat and real cheap but you have to pay for what you don't eat. They weigh your plate and make you pay for wasting food! Never ate at any of these places but it kind of makes sense so you only take what you can or will actually eat.

Sparks 05-05-2006 01:53 AM

That's crazy! I guess you have to respect the business, though. They are just trying to pay the bills too.

SmutGiant 05-05-2006 01:54 AM

I'm totally on the restaurant's side on this one.

edgeprod 05-05-2006 02:02 AM

The restaurant did the right thing, but I wouldn't have charged them for the visit they got thrown out on.

Damian_Maxcash 05-05-2006 02:15 AM

One more vote for the resturant.

Jakke PNG 05-05-2006 02:18 AM

Nice :thumbsup

Joe Citizen 05-05-2006 02:23 AM

I'm with the restaurant. Those who waste food like that deserve no respect.

Vitasoy 05-05-2006 02:35 AM

I'd do the same thing. Sounds like stuck up snobs.

topnotchxxx 05-05-2006 02:45 AM

I'm with the restaurant too.. Wasting food is definitely not the way to go. People are starving around the world. They could have just asked for a doggy bag or something.

Well Dunn 05-05-2006 02:49 AM

Im with the restraunt if they refunded her the bill. They should have turned her down before they seated her if they had already had it in there mind to give em the boot. They knew what they were going to do, seems like they didnt mind taking her cash before kicking her out, knowing full well that they habitualy wasted food at what they said is every visit.

aico 05-05-2006 02:51 AM

If I read it right, it seems like they would get something, take a bite, throw it away then go get more of the same thing they just threw away, on more than one occasion (different visits).

I would have asked them to leave too.

gecko 05-05-2006 02:54 AM

I agree with them and the majority here.

Sydney_AWP 05-05-2006 02:55 AM

Yes, it's EAT ALL YOU CAN not WASTE ALL YOU CAN. Here's the deal, eat all you can put all the food you want but be sure you can eat them all, instead of wasting food share them to beggars. Dont be so stupid even though you're paying an exact amount. :2 cents:

there is such a thing as "the last Straw" perhaps they were being observed to see if the habit continued.Good for the restaurant to stand up for themselfes:2 cents:

Drake 05-05-2006 03:43 AM

Good move:thumbsup

The Duck 05-05-2006 03:50 AM

lol excellent of the chinese

CatKat 05-05-2006 04:05 AM

Well yes, I agree with the restaurant that the food was wasted. Although we are living in commercial and consumer society, we should not forget that there are people who would giv eeverything to have at least one egg a day or few days. Also, somebody spent the time on preparing the food and they just showed how they unappreciate somebodys work.
On other side -They are customers, they pay for services and thatīs how it goes, the restaurant has to count with this. That is like they will not let me shop in my favourite store anymore because I have never been wearing that red dress, which I bought there.

Furious_Female 05-05-2006 04:11 AM

Smart move on the restaurant's behalf :thumbsup

Expo_Vids 05-05-2006 05:10 AM

And chances are the entire family are a bunch of fat flabby fucks. :321GFY

CDSmith 05-05-2006 06:05 AM

Score:

Restaurant - 1
Family of wastrels - 0

Chris 05-05-2006 06:19 AM

you really dont know if the resturant has a real complaint
but if what they are sayin gis true
I think i would of done the same thing

if someone comes in repeadly to a resturant for the all you can eat buffet and display the same habbits of grabbing alot and not eating 90% of what you take the first time and go back do the same go back and do the same

they have the right to refuse service to anyone

welcome to fucking american

seven 05-05-2006 06:30 AM

wow! good to see most gfyers anonymously agreeing on one thing. Yes, some idiots think cos it's All you can eat you have to waste food to make your $5 worth. I've been to buffets with the rules that you are not allowed to waste food/pay extra for the waste and NEVER had I any trouble with it or had to pay extra myself or my family. I believe that rule would only trouble losers :2 cents:

Sarah_Jayne 05-05-2006 07:20 AM

I also think that if the version of events matches what the resturant says they were right to take action.

Phoenix 05-05-2006 07:29 AM

i know some places that charge you for what you leave on your plate

sushi places mostly

Tom_PM 05-05-2006 07:29 AM

Betcha none of that family has ever worked in any capacity on the other side of the counter.
That food costs money to buy, prepare, pay wages, clean dishes etc etc..

minusonebit 05-05-2006 08:31 AM

I think the lawyer who weighed in was wrong. She could sue for false advertising.

In Florida?

escorpio 05-05-2006 08:47 AM

100% in agreement with the restaurant

LittleSassy 05-05-2006 09:24 AM

one more on the restaurant. we should waste what others worked hard for...

Pornwolf 05-05-2006 09:32 AM

That's pretty good promotion for the restaurant.

Downtime 05-05-2006 09:34 AM

i'm with the restaurant too, but then again they decided to make it a buffet so they knew this was going to happen

Manowar 05-05-2006 09:37 AM

she deserves it

Fetish 05-05-2006 09:41 AM

I do not blame the restaurant one bit

Elli 05-05-2006 09:53 AM

I'm totally with the restaurant. Every Chinese buffet I've eaten at says that you will be charged for wasted food in signage as you walk in. It makes perfect sense to me.

BuggyG 05-05-2006 10:42 AM

heheh reminds meof the first time
went to restaurant.. and friend told me
you gotta finish all your food.. all you can eat sushi restaurant..
or else they'll charge you for each piece of sushi/food left on the plate

not that would be any left... but still.. was the first Iheard
and say yeah.. it's a good idea

Doctor Dre 05-05-2006 10:46 AM

If she's only eating a bite per plate... then it,s just fucking normal stupid hahahaha.

Why in hell would you do that ? You KNOW you are costing the restaurent money for no apparent reason except maybe making fun of the waiters face when he sees that.
