I agree with the alchemest... cat's have an uncanny way of knowing exactly where to lay down that will give them the best opportunity to grab your attention. My cat also has those skills.

they want you to play with them... and they are smart so they go to warmup on your laptop :)

They also like anything out of place. If you set a shirt down on your perfectly made bed, they will lie on the shirt 9 times out of 10.

I've got one of the big old 17" IBM monitors with my home computer and my cat Cheeto loves to take naps on top of it when someone is using it. Must be the sound and heat.

cats are great, they are warm, they are tender, i love them.

My recently departed kitty would most commonly sit either in front of the keyboard, or next to it. In front, I could sorta work around him and type, but next to it, he was always on the mouse cord, and then got annoyed when I had to move the mouse.

His other favorite trick was to knock stuff off the desk when I wasn't paying attention to him (or *enough* attention to him, which consisted of pretty much 100% of my attention all the time he was interested in it.)
