I shot a deer today...[PIC]
 

...while hiking through the Niagara Gorge (near the Whirlpool).

I was in the gorge doin' some photography and looking for an old cave I'd heard about...when suddenly this deer appears on the rocky slope just above me about 20-30 yards away.

We stood there starin' at one another for about 4-5 minutes, and I managed to get a dozen shots or so before it took off in the trees.

Deer sightings in that area (especially during tourist season) are extremely rare...especially during daylight. The terrain is hellish and not easy to navigate at the best of times.

An extreme telephoto shot of the cave/outflow I was searching for during the deer encounter. Took this from the opposite side of the whirlpool - not the greatest quality.

I never found the cave, btw. But I lost a few pounds in sweat and no doubt will be hurtin' in the morning. :1orglaugh

I got deers on my backyard, I live in a 100k city.

you should have killed the deer and sent me some meat....deer is GOOD eatins

Great Whirlpool? Got any pics of that? would love to see it.

Most pics I have only show portions of it. I need a fisheye lens to get it all in one frame - its over half a mile in diameter. And the only place to get a really good view of it is from the American side of the river.

In the summer months I try and pack in as much outdoor photography as possible. But sure...I'm here in the office a fair bit also. Somebody has to make that 4700 post count. :winkwink:

Naw, its just the perfect time of the year for pics around Niagara. Not many tourists (yet) to bug me...speakin' of bugs - no mosquitos...good temps - and the greenery is starting to fill in.

Once the tourists start flocking, I constantly get pestered to take people's photos. Its a real distraction at times.

i hiked there once when i was 17... i seen a hell of a lot of deer ... even got to witness 2 cayote's chewing on a dead one

Those are nice pics. That deer makes me want to head up to our ranch in Central Montana. Ton's of deer there. Great hunting & fishing!
