"Industry observers estimate that YouTube, which is streaming 40 million videos and 200 terabytes of data per day, may be paying between a tenth of a cent and half a cent per minute. Neither YouTube nor Limelight would comment on their pricing."

xclusive 05-03-2006 10:48 PM

Wonder what thier profit is at the end of the day

Gaybucks 05-03-2006 10:56 PM

I don't think they have a revenue model yet. Think I read that they're following the old Napster model: establish a name for yourself, then try to figure out a way to make money off of it.

I suspect it's going to be a challenge to make it profitable, particularly when they allow their videos to be streamed remotely, without even visiting the homepage. (Check out how many Myspace profiles have Youtube videos embedded in them.)

grumpy 05-03-2006 10:57 PM

You have reached YouTube, the premier digital video repository on the Internet. We are currently working on the site.

We'll be back soon...

FreeHugeMovies 05-03-2006 11:17 PM

That site will be sold for MILLIONS very soon.

Shoehorn! 05-03-2006 11:23 PM

Wow, thats incredible.

ANAL PASTE 05-03-2006 11:25 PM

I just registered youtube2.name
Fuck you all losers...

KRL 05-03-2006 11:27 PM

I seriously doubt they're paying that much. They probably have cut a deal with Limelight for some kind of JV piece when they get acquired.

JustynErmouth 05-03-2006 11:46 PM

DAMN.... Thats Why We Developed Our Own P2P Network.

That's a good question. I dunno what the answer is but I do know if Myspace and YouTube don't figure out how to make money quick we will be watching the web 2.0 bubble bust.

Pretty simple math 200 terabytes a day is about 200K gigs a day, which is 6 million gigs a month divide that by $1 million and you get 16-17 cents per gig.

Since we know they aren't paying 16c a gig I am guessing that $1mil is more like $250k. That's still a lot of cash for a hosting bill. Someone needs to show them how to setup their own network quick.

no one gives a fuck about your lame ass p2p program :321GFY

chaze 05-04-2006 02:50 AM

Prob a million but they are thinking long term. I am sure they will be worth 100 million in a couple years atleast. For now I bet they are lucky to break even.

Barefootsies 05-04-2006 03:06 AM

I would say it depends on what they are using as their backbone, and if they are running their own shit, or on a network of some kind.

I'm guessing it's a ton of OC8/12/24's and if it's a shared thing, they are probably dropping atleast 10's of thousands a month minimum. Unless they have a sweetheart deal.

:2 cents:

Just Mike 05-04-2006 03:35 AM

I prefer

Badongo.com

to youtube anyway

$5 submissions 05-30-2006 02:38 AM

They probably have a very nice bulk bandwidth package. I'm sure the VCs backing the company would insist on that.

madawgz 05-30-2006 02:44 AM

too bad my comedy site cant burn that much bandwidth per day :)

200k gigs / day is 18 Gigabit monthly... at $15 / megabit (which is high for that volume) it's $270k

$1 million my ass

L-Pink 05-30-2006 02:50 AM

More and more of the videos I enjoyed are being pulled for copyright reasons. Way to much shit to wade thru for me .....

Actually in the short time that Youtube has been out its already outpaced google in terms of uploads and user downloads per day. So they are looking a bit stale, although just because one has more downloads/uploads than the other doesnt mean it will have long term success.

sickkittens 05-30-2006 07:35 AM

Spend money to make money...

Phoenix 05-30-2006 07:38 AM

yes but how much ad money are they generating daily?

the google adsense alone has to be huge

Wiggles 05-30-2006 07:43 AM

i doubt it is that much, seems a little much.

Zyber 05-30-2006 08:02 AM

I guess that the founder is simply hyping up the value of the company. Then sell it quick for many millions and let the new buyers take the loss when the bubble explodes.

It is for sure a risky investment!

Herb Kornfield 05-30-2006 08:04 AM

Under $10 per meg easily when you have the right levels of IP that you are pushing ( gigabit - 10G sustained )

I have a 5G client at $9
