PHOTO Q: how to avoid shiny skin?

im noticing using my strobes, the models skin looks shiny.. is that a make up problem or a light problem? please help.

I would reckon it could be both.

loose powder on the face after all the makeup is on
just "poof" it on lightly with a brush

Elli you need to make a makeup thread since your photos always look so damn good.

make sure the colour is light enough that it isn't darker than the foundation she's wearing OR her own skin colour. Lighter is better.

Get a good blush brush. THe makeup girl will know what you mean. Don't use the flat circle pad that comes in the powder. It'll leave cakes on her face.

Get something hypoallergenic and UNscented. Less chance of a bad reaction that way.

I don't use it a lot, and a tin lasts a LONG time. I found Marcelle's loose face powder works fine. It's in a plastic container.

I use "translucent" because it's a bit twinkly and won't change the colour of anything you use it over.

Loose power, a la Elli's advise...

Try softening up your strobes with some foamboard layouts stacked as close to the model as possible aimed around 45 deg. away from lights towards models to pull your highlights...

And airbrush, airbrush, airbrush.....

as a make up artist, you want to aviod all powders and foundations that have SPF: sun protection factor, aka....titanium dioxide.

this is a huge mistake alot of brides make on their wedding day, and the pics. show it.

Different types of make-up, the quantity of make-up applied, can affect the reflection or absorbency of light compared to the models normal skin-tone.

Nothing looks worse than a model whose face is a different color than surrounding skin. And it really only shows in your flash photos or improperly bounced natural light shots.

Also keep models away from tanning beds at least two days before shooting.
