Hello! Now that thats out of the way...

We're finally going through with getting something going and bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT today with a 50mm prime lense, and a 28-75 zoom lens. We've got a Panasonic AG-DVX100b on the way in a few weeks. Everything else on loan (lighting, filters, etc.).

We're jumping in expecting to make mistakes along the way but our general plan is: get a dedicated server, pick up MAS or Carma.. not sure which yet, pick up nats or mpa3.. again not sure which yet., build up around 3000 images and 50 video sets and a few months worth of blogs... and go from there. We're shooting somewhat artsy fettishy type material. (thats the plan anyways).

Not sure what to expect but what we do expect is a lot of work, and quite a bit of expenses for a while. Since paysites success obviously rely on their conversion and partners we will be hoping for as much input as possible on how to progress.

Anyways, keeping it short, hello and we look forward to working with all of you.

Welcome! Sounds like you and your anonymous partner have a good amount of your venture planned out. we are in fact still up in the air on the host.

Specifically a site a friend of ours runs with moderate success runs on calpop. It doesnt seem dedicated server prices aproach those prices for the amount of transfer.

The part thats worrisome. Usually you get what you pay for and its so much cheaper than others we have found that it seems sort of shady. Also reviews from half a year+ ago are very negative.

The part that looks positive is that we know someone running a site on there (although it doesnt draw significant traffic. It just has its members and sort of just mantains). Also, any recent reviews on calpop seem to be on the positive side.

And at the risk of repeating myself.. anyone have any experiences with calpop? Right now they seem to be the best priced dedicated server host.

Nope, I've never had personal experience with Calpop. It is most likely because it is not often that I do business with data centers that is on the west coast... the farthest west I've gone in the business is Dallas. There are mixed reviews of Calpop's support (both good and bad) from what I hear but their network seems to be top notch as I don't hear of Calpop alot when I hear about network issues.

They could definitely do better on their web site - looks like a 10 year old designed it using a rainbow as a reference.
