Paysite Movie Format
 

What kind of movie formats are people using on there paysites and why?

Use mpeg and wmv cause it works on "all" computers, dont use divx, vidx or any other codecs that needs the surfers to install stuff on their pcs.....

Yeah I am doing wmv's but I was thinking if I should offer some other format aswell. :/

for a given file size wmv will look better than mpg.

but statistically most surfers can play standard mpg files using a variety of players.

640*480 for users

I am using mpg and wmv and never had a complaint. Like Paul mentioned, just stay away from codecs

We offer WMV or RealPlayer for all vids. Also, vids can be streamed on the page or downloaded.

divx avi 720x576 chopped in 40meg bits

I do close. 720 x 480, and 20-30 meg seg's. But works nicely. :thumbsup

The hype about codec complaints are overrated. You just have to tell them they need them, and provide a link or FAQ to get it. End of problem. Few complaints over the years. Maybe a half dozen that were actual codec related.

most good sites I have been in offer wmv,real and quick and they offer in serveral speeds, such as 56k, 128k, 300k, ect.

If you are not thinking of .flv then you are thinking in the past imo. Any embedded videos should be done as .flv, and for downloads .wmv. :2 cents: :2 cents:

exactly .. only problem is that just 0.001 % on this board know how to stream flv without having a flash communication server :winkwink:

wmv is a stupid format to do streaming with .. mpg is good for downloading ..

If they cant figure out how to do .flv vids they need to get out of the business. :winkwink:

I would just stick to divx, almost every user has it and if not it's a fairly short dl for anyone these days. Just no other codec, nothing else is really that mainstream.

WMV ... good compression/quality works on all systems

I use Divx at 640 x 480, cut in5-6 parts of 100-125 megs each...
Also offered is WMV at 320 x 240 , cut in 5-6 parts of 20-28 megs each

Also Ipod, but on a different paysite ...

We offer Windows Media Palyer, Quicktime, and Real... 90% of our enduser's use wmv.

I use windows media encoder for HD content. 640x480 1350kbps

We have been moving to
WMV 9 - full frame - 1200k
Quicktime - full frame - 1200k
and a couple of smaller versions.

Don't forget your 3gpp / mp4 for the portable players. The videos take no time to make and the customers seem to love them.

WMV or MPEG-1 for members areas. Starting to only use Flash Video for tours. Sick of freeloaders.

Considering Flash for members area too, but would have to be a new project, cuz I am not converting all my old shit.

Not even possible at the moment. All content shot in HD and sites screaming they have HD videos.. NO... HD footage still needs to be down converted right now. It will be a while. Don't get me wrong content shot with an HD camera will look great but you are not watching real HD (yet).

It is a good way to market new sites tho.

I'd have to disagree with you on this.

Some purists will say that anything under 6Mps and 1081i is not "real" HD.

Others will say that 720p is still "real" HD

I edit uncompressed HDV and encode it at 4Mps at 720p for web.

there's no money in HD.
