May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., the most-used Internet search engine, expressed concerns to the European Commission over Microsoft Corp.'s new Internet browser, which directs Web surfers to Microsoft's search site.

Google raised the concern as part of a European Commission investigation into Vista, the next version of Microsoft's Windows operating system, Steve Langdon, a spokesman for Mountain View, California-based Google, said today in an interview.

``In those discussions, we have expressed our concerns that Microsoft's approach to setting search defaults in IE 7.0 benefits Microsoft while taking away choice from users,'' Langdon said.

Microsoft is ``fully committed'' to supporting search-engine options in Internet explorer and will ensure users can easily choose from a very long list, Microsoft spokeswoman Stacy Drake McCredy said in an e-mailed statement.

The tussle highlights Google's concern that Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft may be able to gain Internet traffic by directing people to its own search engine. Microsoft handled 11 percent of U.S. searches in March, compared with Google's 49 percent, according to market research Nielsen//NetRatings.

Shares of Google fell $19.04, or 4.6 percent, to $398.90 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading. They have fallen 3.8 percent this year. Microsoft shares rose 14 cents to $24.29 and have fallen 7.1 percent this year.

Google brought up the concerns over Internet Explorer with the U.S. Justice Department and European Commission, the New York Times reported today.

I am looking forward to MSN's PPC engine getting more traffic. I am expecting waay less hitbot hits from them since the traffic will primarily come from the desktops of relative web newbs. Their traffic will be like a combination of AOL'ers and googlers. That's a nice combo if you ask me.

I can't wait for the deployment of Vista!

I agree i've been saying it for awhile M$ is about to be on top:)

sh33p 05-01-2006 03:20 PM

How do you sign on with M$'s advertising service?

vanillaice 05-01-2006 03:25 PM

A big problem is MSN adcenter doesn't allow adult sites from what I understand

WiredGuy 05-01-2006 03:31 PM

MSN's ad service isn't that great. I had a lengthy talk with them during SES and to say it mildly, things will not get better until Mid-summer.

Hasn't IE always directed people to microsoft's search engine?

Tabitha's Toybox 05-01-2006 03:34 PM

I have IE7 right now and it has google search integrated with it...am I missing something?

mx8829 05-01-2006 03:35 PM

I use MASN adcenter (beta ), their traffic convert better than google adwords. I have not checked about adult ads.

Its good to have a stiff competition to google adwords, competition is always good for us advertisers

same thing here, but it might be because I have the google toolbar installed (even though it's hidden)

I don't get it at all.... the search slot is reconfigurable by the hardware maker who bundles in the OS. What are they crying about? If they want it, they can pay for the spot. Hell, you don't see MS crying about FF's automatic inclusion of the google search box to the right of the address bar in FF

vanillaice 05-01-2006 03:49 PM

Here is from their ToS

Quote:

Content Guidelines
Adult/Sexual Content
MSN adCenter will not accept advertising on adult keywords.
Advertisements and associated landing pages may not contain sexually explicit content.
Advertising will not be accepted for sites that feature predominantly adult content.
Adult content, if any, within otherwise non-adult sites, must be clearly segregated from other content.

Maybe MSN doesn't feel threatened by firefox, but Google certainly does of Vista :)

nope, if you go into the IE7 options, you will see you can choose what search engine you want to be used for that little box

i don't have the google toolbar installed anymore because of that handy little box

BlingDaddy 05-01-2006 04:54 PM

Good thing... like to see some more SE equalization. Makes it more competitive IMHO...

vod 05-01-2006 05:02 PM

I used Google and Yahoo (overture, goto) for year's and was told that msn traffic will convert more buisness to buisness then anything else...
msn should get more traffic than yahoo and google just because msn is windows...
...

If you are still only doing adult you are behind the curve man. Lotsa money to be made applying your porn knowledge to other things.

Yeah it sucks now. You can be number 1 for certain keywords and still get a traffic that trickles slower than a man pissing with prostate problems. :Oh crap

But, as you said, mid summer it should be good. By next year it will be incredible. Competition is good.:pimp

Actually I was referring more towards their editorial staff. They never reply to emails, they reject without reasons, and there's no appeal process. From what I was told, they have a serious staff shortage that they cannot handle the volume of current inquiries and need to triple their staff just to handle the people in beta as it is.

Ouch. I don't feel all of that pain when dealing with them but I'm sure you run infinitely more campaigns than I do.

SmokeyTheBear 05-01-2006 06:17 PM

heh why do you think google is trying their best to get people to switch to firefox..

Yep and it's in Beta still

Google works as good as search will be for years to come. Just make due :2 cents:

Vista will be good but the truth is Mac is on its way up google is on its way down and microsoft wont go nowhere

Pornwolf 05-01-2006 06:29 PM

True, but Macs are turning into windows vehicles. Vista will be more popular on Macs than OS X within 2 years.

on it's way up? where do you get that?

they only saw a 1% increase in sale over the holiday season this past christmas

minusonebit 05-01-2006 07:23 PM

As much as I hate M$, I agree this will be a good thing for adult and the internet as well. Sure, its kinda manipulative, but Google needs competition and I'm willing to sacrafice the right rights of some AOLers for it.

That is google's saving grace. If not for that we would probably see them launch a browser next year.

Yea, i'm well behind it. I wish I knew the right path to take with mainstream. It's easy in adult.. start with free sites / galleries then learn from there. Where do you start with mainstream?

Pornwolf 05-01-2006 10:02 PM

There's so many places to get started it's sick.

Hit me on ICQ tomorrow 152-970~595

Anyone that is trying to make the switch to mainstream and play catchup feel free to give me a shout.

GonZo 05-01-2006 10:09 PM

Microsoft isnt accepting adult keywords or keywords driven to adult sites or landing pages.
