it has to do with depression, loneliness, isolation, etc. all humans need comfort. food is comfort when it does not come from other sources.

and it is a vicious cycle. person becomes overweight, then fat, perhaps then loses a significant other, more depression sets in, and the person becomes lonely and obese. this is why criticizing the victim is counter-productive to curing the problem.

and it is almost impossible for this person to correct the situation by herself.

MANY people eat themselves to death. they need professional counseling to build self esteem.

without self esteem there will be no weight loss.
