What European countries have high-speed net access?

I'm just curious, but can any of you Euros tell me what high-speed net access is like in your country?

The UK has some DSL I think, Ireland has none, and I think Germany has some kinda high-speed net access, but I'm not sure.

Whats it like in these countries:

UK
France
Germany
Spain
Italy
Switzerland
Czech
Austria
Holland
Sweden
Finland
Norway

Educate me please!

davvve 05-12-2002 06:02 PM

Sweden got a big broadband company providing 10 mbit/s connections. It's pretty popular. We also got a lot of DSL companies...

Dreamman010 05-12-2002 06:03 PM

I would say the following have high speed access for sure:

UK
France
Germany
Switzerland
Holland
Sweden
Finland
Norway
Israel

vidsweb 05-12-2002 06:03 PM

Also, can you tell me how much does broadband net access cost in your country?

Cool.

Beastiepoo 05-12-2002 06:22 PM

The UK has ADSL and Cable (if you live in the right areas). The ADSL access is better than it uesd to be...8 months ago or so, they were bottlenecking the speed and connection. Also the service would go offline for 1, 2, 3 days at a time with no warning or reason given. Usually on a Sunday.

We pay equiv. of $65 a month for unlimited ADSL. A bit pricey but cheap and fast compared to 56k dial-up.

Can't speak for cable as we live too far away from the current installations.

Hope I've answered you coherently, I've had too much red wine. :thumbsup

vidsweb 05-12-2002 06:26 PM

Yeah, I've read that the UK is doing a good job of rolling out the DSL access. Good for them!

Tanker 05-12-2002 06:43 PM

Isreal is considered Europe HAHAHAHAHAHA

vidsweb 05-12-2002 08:23 PM

So does anyone have any info on high-speed net access in Europe besides the UK?

What about France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, etc...?

Prodigy 05-12-2002 09:38 PM

I have a 4 mbits/sec line here in Romania. Plenty of broadband access here but it's not cheap.

SirTreX 05-12-2002 10:08 PM

Holland has ADSL and Cable, yes high speed internet connection.
Almost everyone in the big cities have Cable/ADSL here.

Paul Markham 05-12-2002 10:53 PM

Honest I would not know hi speed from mt elbow.
But there are a lot of very big live cam sites here, so connection has to be fast. Ans it is probably cheaper than the rest of Europe.

Israel wants to be part of Euurope and the EEC because the Jews there are mostly 1st generation Europeans.

BabeHunter 05-12-2002 11:14 PM

Israel considered to be in Europe/Asia

but who cares...we have High speed intrenet here cable/adsl

Well, it is a country largely settled and populated by European Jews and their descendants. However, I'm not sure that's enough to make it a European country. By that standard, the USA and Canada are European countries.

That would also make Australia and New Zealand European countries as well.

JeanClaude VanDamme 05-13-2002 01:25 AM

France has DSL and Cable Internet
The cost is about 45 ? per month (40$)

beastiepoo - who are you with? most 512k down/256k up ADSL is now at 20-25GBP, so thats what - 35USD???

SDSL should be coming out back end of this year which offers 2mbit down and 2mbit up, more news as and when that happens!

(you can get 155mbit lines or however fast you want over hear if you have the money and dont live in scotland =))

boldy 05-13-2002 01:47 AM

In Germany you can get DSL in almost every city. Not that fast (768 down/128 up) but it does the job for around $30. In the bigger cities you also sometimes have smaller local providers that offer a better deal (for example in my city i am paying ~$60/mo. for two phone lines and 2mbit/192 DSL).

Hope this helps :)

Jakke PNG 05-13-2002 02:59 AM

Yeah. Lots of high speed (Cable, adsl) connections in finland. I pay 40? for a cable.

mn 05-13-2002 03:16 AM

In Sweden most people have broadband or can have if they want... its cheap too. I pay around $20 per month for a shared 10mbit... its more expensive than US if I buy for a company and use for hosting and stuff like that though. Sweden is probably the best country in the world if you see it from a surfers pespective.

Terenzo 05-13-2002 03:30 AM

Switzerland:
256 Kbit/s downstream and 64 Kbit/s upstream - $25
.
.
.
.
2048 Kbit/s downstream and 352 Kbit/s upstream - $170

i've seen most people going with adsl or cable (256kbit/s)

SABAI 05-13-2002 03:50 AM

france has ADSL, Cable and Satelite connections

you can have two different ADSL speeds depending on how much you wanna spend....the satelite is really good but uploads are not yet possible tho, they are talking about making it possible by the end of 2003

Note that 10mbit ain't that common in sweden, only in largest cities yet. Most people got ADSL or Cable on 512kbit only ($30).

And yes company lines are very expensive $1500-2000/mth for 2mbit :(

vidsweb 05-13-2002 02:04 PM

Does anybody know if Spain or Italy have any high-speed net access (ie: DSL or Cable)?

We are stuck with BTinternet. Sad but true. Being on the south coast we can't get NTL. We would if we could tho...it is cheaper.

It would be nice to live closer to civilization I suppose. If we moved even 5 miles in any direction we wouldn't even be able to get ADSL! We take what we can get.:winkwink:

Do Americans view Europe as some sort of backwater? I'm sure ALL of the Western European countries have high-speed access in the form of either cable or DSL. Eastern Europe...I think it's more spotty.

Most people in the US are unaware that the standard of living is actually higher in Germany, for example, than the US.

That is very true. I'm sure most of them still think Europeans use coal furnaces and only bathe once a week.! :winkwink:

Holland has practically in every shithole highspeed access.
ADSL, DSL, Cable, and now I-mode wireless too.

Spain has ADSL and DSL Throughout the Country. Every Scandinavian country has High speed access. I think there
are very few european countries without high speed internet
access.

Yes - I know they all are - not sure about Czech - but what about Denmark?

If you're lucky and move in somewhere they got "BredBandsBolaget" here in Sweden you get dedicated 10 Mbit for about $30 a month. Right now I'm paying about $7 a month for my 2 Mbit-connection (i'm a student) =)

If you ain't that lucky you can always get an ADSL-connection (0,5 Mbit for ~ $35 / month (you can get that almost anywhere now).

cronos 05-14-2002 07:15 PM

I got a free 10mbit in my flat here in Norway:thumbsup
