Stupid Question: Pageview vs Uniques; whats better?

are they the same thing? if not, which is a better indicator for how busy/productive a website is doing?

depends on a few fators . . . primarily, what kind of site, and are the views coming from people or spiders . . . and I guess, which you prefer.

well say its a mainstream or some sort of free site.

i am seeing stats of big pageviews, but i dont think they translate to uniques.

uniques of course... if you have 1 user watching 100 pages you have 100 pageviews, but still only 1 potential customer...

It depends. If 1 user looks at 100 pages then that says you're website is very interesting to this user. For some websites, this is very valuable information.

Unique visitors are only important if you only want to know how many different people view your website as a whole everyday. Pageviews are sometimes important for the reason above.

As porn is concerned, I think uniques would be more important in most cases.

no, this is what some stats page gave me.. i am looking to buy advertising but i see alot of pageviews but no mention of uniques..

i gather the site is productive with little traffic..

That could be true. I'd want to know how many uniques there are before I purchase advertising. I mean, suppose the ratio is 1:1000 then you know there is something dodgy going on.

Pageviews are good only if you've got some CPM advertising on your pages that pay based on the # of times the ad is viewed(not clicked).

I usually compare uniques versus pageviews to calculate the productivity of my surfers.
