Sample Msg to surfers re: .XXX

I just posted this to our Surfers. Won't hurt to do the same for your site.

Let's get some more voices heard on opposition to .xxx

Another threat to your right to view porn.

Hi,

ICANN (http://www.icann.org/) which is the body that controls domain names, is reviewing a proposal for a new .XXX suffix that porn sites will need to use on the premise that ISPs (and parents) will then be able to protect porn from children more effectively.

What isn't immediately obvious is that the push for this domain is from a private company (ICM Registry) that wants to have exclusive rights to manage registrations of the proposed .xxx domain suffix. The value of all the new .xxx adult domain registrations would be in the hundreds of millions of $$

What it most probably means for you if it goes ahead

It means that your ISP could very easily flick a switch and block .XXX sites being viewable to you. They may then require you contact them and ask that your account not fall under this filter - and it is very likely they will want a payment from you for this. (they can justify that by saying its for age verification)

So, why am I telling you this?

For several reasons the main ones being;
A) ICANN is wanting public feedback to help with the decision
B) I can't personally stomach the fact that forcing all adult sites to a new domain so it can be easily censored is the best approach for anyone

Also, if the real reason is keeping sites from kids then a better way would be to create a kid safe domain, such as .kids and any sites that are child friendly can electively have a .kids domain. This is more practical because it isn't just porn that kids shouldn't view, (e.g. rottten.com) and they will not ever be able to get all adult sites under a .xxx name anyway.

What can you do to help?

Be informed - and send an email to ICANN's feedback email address for this topic wich is;
[email protected]

FANTASTIC idea - I am posting this in the members areas of all of our sites right now. The more people onboard the anti-xxx bandwagon the better!

madawgz 04-27-2006 10:23 PM

great idea, get them involved too :)

ozmatt 04-27-2006 10:30 PM

cheers Newbie Nudes ;)

kmanrox 04-27-2006 10:35 PM

good stuff, i hope it catches on!

s2kcord 04-27-2006 10:39 PM

Now all the surfers are going to buy up all the .xxx and the webmasters are going to buy the domains from the surfers for 1,000,000 dollars then the surfers are going to buy real girls to have sex with and not jack off anymore. :1orglaugh

Bama 04-27-2006 10:57 PM

Great idea - now if you'll just change the wording of your message to reflect factual and truthful wording... you're all set!

Pistol 04-27-2006 11:02 PM

Awesome idea NN. We'll follow suit.

polish_aristocrat 04-28-2006 03:23 AM

bump, you're the man !

polish_aristocrat 04-28-2006 03:30 AM

on another note, i dont really understand / support the .kids idea

i'd say othing is broken now, so no ned to fix it ( not countging email porn
spam )

when everyone who opposes .xxx lobbes for .kids it looks kinda not natural

one more thing, webmasters can also send emails to icann from their non porn adresses

we alll remember, that last year ironicaly the christian groups opposed .xxx ,, now it shouldnt look like only the adult industry opposes it

polish_aristocrat 04-28-2006 03:31 AM

you can all also email individually ICANN board members

http://www.icann.org/general/board.html

Board of Directors

tony286 05-07-2006 08:22 PM

davecummings 05-07-2006 08:45 PM

Bump---this needs constant emphasis, as ICANN votes on Wed.

I just uploaded your text to a spare domain and added a small prewritten email.

Feel free to link this page any way you want from all your high traffic sites.

NTSS 05-07-2006 10:35 PM

Great idea...but im afraid its too little too late...

pack 05-07-2006 10:40 PM

blah blah blah blah.

Too long.

Cut 80% and don't 'bury the lead'

=)

Zester 05-08-2006 12:01 AM

it's good but you have to cut it shorter

Xplicit 05-08-2006 12:05 AM

I'll add something to my pages too.

I hope the high-traffic sponsors get behind this. Personally I know I support sponsors who support the industry.

babymaker 05-08-2006 12:16 AM

Bump - site owners think about doing this.

reynold 02-05-2007 09:04 PM

Interesting. But there's also many new opportunities being created by the .xxx 'movement'. Let's not deny that. Basically, it will make the porn game more of a "pay to play" kind of business ...not like the open system it is now. Also, there might be new ISPs that grow up just to service the XXX market.

Think out of the box, man. Think out of the box. While the haterz and censors would like to marginalize porn, those who think out of the box will see that this might be an opportunity to make EVEN MORE money.

seeric 02-05-2007 09:07 PM

thank you.

I like "open", it's worked thus far and it ensures the continued infusion of new blood and new ideas into what was an exclusive old boy's club.

Anyone here who remembers the boring, predictable, paint-by-numbers, formulamatic porn churned out in the 80's and early 90's knows exactly that of which I speak.

I am and that's precisely why I don't want to get boxed in.
