thanks guys, what I meant is downloadable file size like 20 Mb, 50 Mb, 200 Mb? I should've been more specific (I'm ripping DVDs so I'm not sure how big to slice the files)

also DivX??? don't you get like 2 million emails from guys that are unable to play DivX, have problem with sound etc, I'm sure I can write some help/instructions page but don't surfers get confused

No problem with Divx.... Just put on your site the Klite codec pack for d/l.

Size : I use to split divx in files of 80-100 megs each ... and upload a whole vid a week on one day. But I changed that lately, since surfers were complaining I wasn't updating daily .. Easy to fix.. Now my vids are per scene, and I schedule one scene a day ... surfers : :321GFY

WMV: about 20-30 megs....

most the files are 120-140 Mb but I have a few that are around 200 so I might slice them in half

No. I have coded all mine in DivX and rarely get a complaint. However, I also tell people ahead of time they NEED DivX and provide the link to go and get the codec. Being proactive illiminates a lot of the bullshit.

As for videos, I break them into 2-3 minute segments. They run around 20-30 meg each, and are 720 x 480. I also make sure that people know this as well in descriptions. So I ward off the dialup users so they can't complain they were not warned ahead of time.

All this said, a lot of people do it differently, both in DiVX, WMV, AVI and alike. Same for dimensions, file size, and bitrates. There is no absolute. It comes down to what is manageable for the members. As well, the quality you are wanting, or willing to put out.
