Pearl Jam -- New Album, Discuss

For some reason Rolling Stone sends me a magazine every month (I swear I never paid for it, I like to pretend they send it to me on the basis of being hot) and this month's issue said the new Pearl Jam album was "Album Of The Year" or some such. I'm not a huge Pearl Jam fan... just like a few of their songs really, but I thought hey, I should give the entire new CD a listen. So I did.

I am not impressed.

Discuss.

Something happened to Pearl Jam... not sure what, but something happened... they went all Pink Floyd after a few albums...

OMG, it's sooo like creative. They called it "Pearl Jam". I know. Blew me away as well.

Unfortunately the album just does not "do it" for me. Oh well. Can't say I didn't try. :upsidedow

Well I am!! But I'm not surprised, PJ's music is one that hasn't changed much over the years and it just rocks.

My CD is pre-ordered and will be on my doorstep May 2nd.

Yes, I'm a HUGE fan!

VicD 04-26-2006 04:00 PM

So they're still alive...

Vs and Binaural weren't great ... however, Vitalogy, No Code, and Riot Act were top notch. Well, maybe not Vitalogy ... that was half and half.

No Code, seriously my favorite next to Ten. Riot Act follows pretty closely to that.

And then there is the Review Mirror ... probably the best compilation CD I've ever heard. : )

Ten was awesome. One of the worst album covers of all time though.

yep they surface with a new CD every couple of years, sell about 1.5 million copies to the hardcore fans ( often they get no radio play ) sell out a world tour and then disappear for a few more years.

Back in the early 90's I wrote for a music mag called The Rocket and interviewed these guys about a month before ten came out. They are a good bunch of dudes who, IMO, write the music they want and don't allow themselves to be compromised by the music industry machine. I haven't heard the new CD yet, but can't wait.

They only made two videos (one for the song Jeremy, and a cartoon for the song Do The Evolution). They're not media MTV whores and when they were on top of their game, they challenged ticketmaster for ripping off fans with high ticket prices. Their songs are wide in scope musically and lyrically (sorry, no teen angst, depression, or bad boy gangster wanna be lyrics here).

Their later stuff is mediocre but that happens to all bands that stay together. Four or five stellar full length albums is quite an accomplishment for a modern band.

I recall they also made a video for "Alive".

Black and Yellow Ledbetter are my two favs by them.

I like Jeremy. It's a song based on the true events of a young American boy who was ignored by his parents and abused by his peers. One day he brought a loaded gun to class and committed suicide with it. Disturbing.

"Jeremy spoke in class today"

Pearl Jam is too alt to try to make albums anyone will like. Infact I remember Eddie bitching at one point that he would do his best to make their next album unplayable on the radio and unlistenable for everyone but the most diehard among the grunge movement. Statements like this should help us understand why grunge died. The guys who rocked like PJ, commited popular suicide because they hated being considered pop. I stopped being able to listen to them after their first album 10, which ranks among the best albums ever made imo. To bad they couldn't have just stuck with that sound :disgust

This being said World Wide Suicide does sound pretty cool, but its no Jeremy.

I don't feel like "grunge" as a movement ever existed. It's all just music to me. I like PealJam's attitude in keeping their music pure. It's uncommon and refreshing. After Metallica sold their soul, I didn't think there was any hope.
