20th anniversary of Chernobyl explosion

With that bloody information embargo, much more people all over the world were affected just because of one stupid decision.
The radiation in the Czech rep. was then 60 times higher than usually (which is nothing compare to the cities close to Chernobyl - they started evacuating after three days - useless !!!)
Now our doctors are wondering why so many young people in their tventies have problems with thyroid gland these days.
I still remember those days 20 years ago - walking to school, my dad told me not to pick flowers and touch anything outside.

I remember these days too, I was living in Bulgaria then, NOTHING was said to us as well although the government knew about it. I was happily eating all the veggies and fruits, only three or four days after the explosion there was a press release...

Growing up not too far from Three Mile Island and that happening the year my sister was born I often think about what things would have been like if it was as bad as Chernobyl.

Exactly. The explosion was 400 times stronger that Hiroshima - how did they suppose to hide it? It still makes me thinking of it. People sitting safe and sound in their offices made a decision and to "protect their country´s reputation" they actually killed hundreds of their own citizens.
Even these days their 20 y/o act is still causing health problems of innocent people all over the world and no one was and will ever be punished for that

Chernobyl

I've been reading a lot about Chernobyl the past couple of days with all the news stories commemorating the 20th anniversary. I do not remember it when it happened. I was 9. Here are a couple of good sites I came across about Chernobyl:

Did you see the radioactive cloud that crossed over? It supposedly went over the entire northern hemisphere. Eastern Europe must have been so tired of the Soviet Union's BS after that. What strange ways the Soviet Union had back then. They still do actually and their no longer the Soviet Union. The Russian Gov't reacted in the same way when the sumbarine Kursk sunk. And that was, what, 6 years ago?

I didn´t even know somthing happened, I was 8 then.
You are right. And with Kursk submarine as well - they just let people die there. There is a saying here in my country about their behaviour - translated it is "there is a lot of us" - meaning thereir country is populous enough so it´s no loss to sacrifice a few people time from time.
The worst thing is that Chernobyl didn´t affec their citizens only.

I was at the Chernobyl museum in Kiev in January - quite a sobering experience. They had photos of hundreds of children that died in the area and some graphic pic of the aftermath. It was just scary.

Now apparently, the area is teeming with wildlife and relatively healthy - but still a ghost town. I didn't get to visit but it must be quite an eerie feeling.
