Fake usernames are all over. Sometimes you disable old accounts that had access because they get posted on a password board or friends share etc.

Why not take advantage of this. On 2-3 incorrect logins, send them to a page offering a $1 access for a day.

"Your password is incorrect! If you got this from a friend or a password board, it is an expired account blah blah. HOWEVER we are offering this amazing $1 access for you today only. "

I've seen to many sites that send to a default apache incorrect password page - stupid business move.

This works. Why not just try it? Better than not having anything there at all.

While I agree that since they're just lookin' for free stuff, and will likely just vanish when they don't get in - its all a numbers game...and there's a small chance they may explore the $1 option. Even if it converts 1:5000, what's the harm?

Possible harm is word getting out and then people telling people and soon everyone does this to get cheap access.
