I didn't know you were into this stuff Pete! Detroit has to be one of the flat out best places for large abandoned shit. From what I understand, cops don't bother with most of the abandoned places nor do they have any type of security.

BluewireAngie 04-25-2006 10:56 AM

Great shots! The hallway looks spooky. Is that place haunted?

Sosa 04-25-2006 11:27 AM

wow, would look nice if it was fixed up and restored.

Brad Mitchell 04-25-2006 11:49 AM

You have some big balls exploring that shit! I wouldn't do it alone but if you ever want company next time you go downtown let me know :) Great pics! Reminds me of when I used to play paintball downtown as a kid at a place that was an old abandoned factory :)

Sad that we can allow our cities to get like this and yet spend billions of dollars every year restoring other parts of the world:(

Damn that is some cool shit. I would definetly be up for this in Seattle if anyone knows of some good buildings. Pretty damn cool

SilentKnight 04-25-2006 02:46 PM

Very similiar style of architecture as the BCT in Buffalo - especially the high dome interior ceilings on the ground floor.

BCT is being restored, though...its already underway. They've got the original clock reinstalled in the central lobby.

Most of the places still in operation dont have any type of security, for that matter. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

There wasn't much security around here before 9/11. You can still get passed security if you are either slick or talk a very good game, but its tough.

Havin' the gift-of-the-gab is definitely an asset. And a plausible-sounding reason why you're doing the photography. I often tell security or property owners that I'm doing historical archive photos for the Niagara Region Conservation Authority (not a total lie since I did once receive an award from them years ago). But that only works in the local area, of course.

Also depends on how you're dressed sometimes. I've had security come up to me on a few occasions and simply ask, "How much longer will you be needing for the photos?" - mistakenly thinking that I was there on official assignment or something (shrug).

Of the 80-100 abandoned places I've photographed over the years, I've only ever once run in to a potentially nasty confrontation (with a building owner), and I still managed to weasel my way outta real problems just by staying calm and talking my way out. Helps to be in my 40s...and not just some kid with a spraycan and a crowbar, heh.

reynold 04-26-2006 01:50 AM

very cool pics but the interior dark shots give me the creeps
