More than 1,000 Iraqis who live south of Baghdad within the bombed and looted complex that was once the centre of Saddam Hussein's nuclear programme are at acute risk of radioactive poisoning, the UN's nuclear authority said yesterday. The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said it was launching a clean-up operation at the Tuwaitha plant, 14 miles south of Baghdad, and appealed for international involvement in what it said would be a long-term challenge. Medical uses would warrant a few grams. There are approximately 28.35 grams to the ounce.

Tuwaitha is the least of the contamination problems in Iraq.

The effects of depleted uranium from US bombing far supercedes that and is/will affect 100,000's of Iraqis now and in the future - as well as those invading the country.

Already there are DP rates 20 fold higher than the prescibed safety level - and the usual infant malformations, leukemia and other forms of cancer well above any "norms".



PS... BTW.. There are also a couple of Caribbean islands totally contaminated and fucked by the US and where cancer rates in the population are around 30%. The good news is further "test runs" have now ceased and that activity has been shifted to .. think Vegas area. At least they are fucking their own backyard now and not shitting on other people.

Depleted uranium is used in armor piercing rounds used by tanks, armored personnel carriers, tank buster aircraft (fixed and rotary wing) but to the best of my knowledge is not used in bombs. The US has not done any atmospheric nuclear tests in many decades. Basically since they learned of the severity of the fallout problem.
