Minutemen to Bush: Build Fence or We Will

Quote:

Originally Posted by ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN / Associated Press | April 20 2006
Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox has a message for President Bush: Build new security fencing along the border with Mexico or private citizens will.

Simcox said Wednesday that he's sending an ultimatum to the president, through the media, of course - "You can't get through to the president any other way" - to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25.

Or, Simcox said, by the Memorial Day weekend Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately.

"We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise."

Simcox said a half-dozen landowners along the Arizona-Mexico border have said they will allow fencing to be placed on their borderlands, and others in California, Texas and New Mexico have agreed to do so as well.

"Certainly, as with everything else, we're only able to cover a small portion of the border," Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border. I suspect that's why we'll never get control of the border."

But he said the plan is to put up secure fencing that truly will be an effective deterrent, and to show how easily it can be accomplished.

Simcox gave this description of the envisioned barrier-and-fencing complex:

Start with a 6-foot deep trench so a vehicle can't crash through; behind it, roll of concertina (coiled, razor-edged barbed wire), in front of a 15-foot high heavy-gauge steel mesh fence angled outward at the top.

Behind the fence will be a 60- to 70-foot wide unpaved but graded dirt road, along with inexpensive, mounted video cameras that can be monitored from home computers. On the other side of the road will be a second, 15-foot fence, with more concertina wire on its outside.

"It's a very simple, effective design based on feedback we've had from Border Patrol and the military," Simcox said. "It's a fence that can be built on the cheap, effective and secure."

Simcox said supporters will try to build the fencing with volunteer labor. Surveyors and contractors have offered to help with the design and survey work, he said, and some have said they will provide heavy equipment.

Simcox said those involved in the planning hope to keep costs to between $125 and $150 a foot.

Access to land literally on the border is an issue because so much is state-leased trust property or federally owned, he said.

"You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said.

He said the Minuteman plan is "to keep turning up the heat" until President Bush has to respond somehow.

Opinions?

Splum 04-21-2006 02:22 PM

If its private property why not? Its not like there are some zoning laws out in the fricking desert restricting fencing.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with erecting a fence on private land with private funds, Running Mouth. :)

No no, thats what guns are for. Shoot the fuckers.

I was wondering when some people were going to get together and form a coalition to purchase land and fence privately. Someone should start a company that does nothing but buy up border acerage with donated money and fence the border facing edge and then resell all the land inside the US except for a one acre strip that sits along the border.

This one acre land would be very valueable in other ways, the group could lease the right to put buried cable, pipeline, railroad tracks, toll roads or just about anything else along the line. Companies that deal with right of way stuff would love to be able to build a cross-continent whatever and deal with ONE land owner that could give them the green light and the easement to do so.

Money from leases could be used to buy and secure more land, mend fences or staff those fences with armed gaurds.

Large portions of the borderland is owned by the government. Good luck getting them to sell.

The day citizens start building the wall themselves is the day the government takes our wishes seriously and does it. Can you imagine the embarrassment our government would face if we started to build the wall ourselves?

I personally think the fence should be electrified, and Mexico charged the utility bill to run it. Zap these leaches before they suck our blood.

Rictor 04-21-2006 10:58 PM

Why don't we just open up the Mexican border and let them all come in? They'll all be lazy Americans in a few months and fit in just fine.

You need to pick up a history book and learn why the Berlin Wall was built.

Socks 04-21-2006 11:45 PM

I had CNN on today, Lou Dobbs (biggest fucking meathead in the world) was doing a story on how americans with crappy jobs are upset about how Bush said that Mexicans would do jobs americans don't want to do. They do their jobs just fine.

Funny part of the story is - none of the people interviewed had an idea he said it to begin with, and seemed to be like "uhhh yea, I guess that's bad" like they weren't even sure, CNN was just putting the story in their mouth for them.

Americans want high wages and cheap prices - that means war.

border problem ... Have you ever been to Berlin while the wall was up ... I did, quite a few times...

They need two fences then put land mines between the two !

The Berlin Wall was built by the commies to keep people from LEAVING the country and not the other way around.

No irony at all.

Thats right, it is all BLM land. You can stake a mining claim on BLM land though. Not sure if one could also put up a fence to protect the "mining company".

BLM can reject a claim if they don't approve the companies plans. The claim must also be worked within a specified period of time. Not all borderland falls under BLM jurisdiction, some is Forest Service. Land in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument can not be claimed.

So trying to play a "mining claim" game wouldn't be too practical, though in some areas of the border it might be workable if there actually was a workable mineral deposit there.

Peaches 04-22-2006 10:26 AM

I would donate. I was reading in National Geographic about the AZ border and how many head of cattle are lost because the illegal Mexicans tear apart the wire fencing to get in and then leave it open. Oh, sorry, not the "illegal" Mexicans, the "undocumented workers", lol *rolling eyes*

Exactly. It would be the equivalent of Mexico building a wall to keep their best citizens in the country instead of fleeing to the US.

A Mexican-American wall would actually be a great benefit to Mexico over a long period of time. They have lost their most talented, educated people to the US already. The wall would help to keep them in to develop Mexico.

This wall is a no-brainer for everyone involved. It must go up.

Build a fence that big cheaply without using mexican labor :1orglaugh

aico 04-22-2006 04:03 PM

This makes me want to go sit on my newly manicured lawn, drink some freshly squeezed orange juice while eating a chimichanga and admiring my car's handwashed shine, and then I'll ponder on how this so-called "wall" might affect my life.

Just hire them to build it, but make them all work from the Mexico side of the fence, hopefully they won't figure it out until it's done. :thumbsup

You mean like hire them all stateside and have them work on the Mexican side and hope they do not relize it? Then just slide the check through when finished.

According to one of the leaders of the Mexican movement here they are no longer "undocumented workers" they are "imported laborers" WTF

I'm not for screwing anyone over either but I can't think of a more appropriate community service sentence for those that have been caught residing here illegally than to have them build a fence that will keep themselves from trespassing again. :thumbsup

The educated and talented people are the ones that stay. It's displaced farmworkers from rural areas that come to the U.S. You know very little about Mexico.

So even if it's build, what will stop someone from climbing over it? It will make things slightly more difficult, but nothing a ladder and some wire cutters will not take care off....
