Billy Corgan from the smashing pumpkins went solo with a new band but I didn't like that music. Neither did the other fans so the smashing pumpkins are getting together again from what I heard. Looking forward to that.
I don't see the r&b scene fading away pretty soon. Girls & women just like that kind of music.
If you are into rock music don't focus on the commercial circuit to much, try alternative ways to get your music. There are many good bands out there but they don't match with the current music market so that's why you won't see them on mtv.
The vines, the strokes are two recent bands, both of them are good, also check out the "yeah yeah yeahs"

You forgot Mrs. Cobain, Courtney Love with her band Hole. She used to make some good songs.
