Look for link dumps, you can get some free traffic that way.. Just make sure they have some google PR so you know that the site isn't banned.

I was going to post about watching out for hitbots, but since you're looking for FREE hits, I guess even a DDOS would qualify.

Yea, I know that's not what you're looking for, so this is a just a bump post for you. That and the toplist sites could help - though for those, recip links are necessary and help increase where you place on their site; but they're free.
