L.A. woman diagnosed with bubonic plague
 

LOS ANGELES - A woman is in stable condition with bubonic plague, the first confirmed human case in Los Angeles County since 1984, health officials said Tuesday.

The woman, who was not identified, was admitted to a hospital April 13 with a fever, swollen lymph nodes and other symptoms. A blood test confirmed the bacterial disease, and she was given antibiotics, officials said.

Bubonic plague is not contagious, but if left untreated it can morph into pneumonic plague, which is. Bubonic plague is usually transmitted to humans from the bites of fleas infected by rodents.

Health officials said they suspect the woman was exposed by fleas in her home and that there was no cause for alarm. An estimated 10 to 20 Americans contract plague each year, mostly in rural communities.

Bubonic plague is believed to have been the "Black Death" that killed 25 million people in Europe between 1346 and 1351.

Awww my poor Aly! I feel for you girl, I've had the worst cold this past week too... however I'm glad it's just a cold and not the black death lol.

Not a big deal at all, like they said as long as it is treated it is just like any other bacteria.

this reminds me of my friends band in LA called Bubonic Plague..their awesome!

There is a rather large rodent in the mongolian steppes which can give you the bubonic plague (if you eat it).

no ammount of cooking or prepparation will remove this chance.
now i add. the bubonic plague started and was first recorded in the (im not completly sure)balcans not long after the mongol invasion(and during the crusades) anyone see some serious links here?

I know, that was freaky. I watch that girl get really sick, find out its the plague. The news comes on right after house, and someone in my area has the plague. FREAKY! :)

there are a few thousand cases a year i believe.

I cant watch that show - I dont know if you get him in other shows in the US but he is a big star here and usually plays a very 'British' role and is a good comedian.

Seeing him in a str8 role with that fake American acsent is just too weird.

I find it a little unsettling, too.... Too damn bad, I've heard it's a good show!

I love the show, its good! I cannot imagine him with an accent. Dont ruin my image of him!!!!!:disgust :winkwink:

worked in a pathlab for 7 years never seen a case of Yersinnia but here is an excerpt for you to get your facts straight
