This is just another example of why it is impossible to " spread western democracy " to such a region ... and why a dictator is practically mandatory to run the countries of that region ...

I don't think a dictator is needed, but no doubt spreading 'western' democracy there isn't going to catch on for another few hundred years. If you spread democracy to that region all you are going to end up with is Governments and countries like Iran (which has some sort of democracy). A country in which extreme religious figures control the true power of the country, and the leaders are hardcore Islamists. People think that if you give them a vote suddenly you'll end up with all these great moderate leaders like most Western nations have, free speech, a move away from religion and so on, it's just not going to happen anytime soon. So sure give them the vote, it's better than a dictator for a number of reasons, but don't expect any real changes. That said, no way I'm going to ask my countrymen to go die so some country in the Middle East can have the vote.

It's hard to teach democracry to people after carpet bombing them during so-called "raids to find insurgents" and standing on a battleship, waving flags, celebrating "mission accomplished" when you've just sent a country into the dark ages.

Seriously, anyone who believes this war was about spreading democracy is extremely ignorant. Any Washington think tank could've concluded it was an impossible wet dream long ago.

I think all the posters in this thread that made mention of democracy not taking hold in the Middle East should look at what happened when a triving democracy did exist. I know no one will want to look it up but in case you do you can start here.

Their seems to be two different stories here: one being released by a government ministry and the other from the police, friends, and students.

Just because you see the anti-war shit on cnn all day, and never actualy talk to people who served over there, doesnt make you an expert. I have spoke to alot of marines who served over there, and they all have great stories about the kids. The stories you hear on tv usualy have two sides. For example they will tell you a car full of civilians gets shot up by us troops. They dont tell you that it ignored 100 warning shots, and was speeding towards them. They dont tell you alot of shit because it doesnt fit their agenda. Sure alot of bad shit happens over there, but alot of great stuff happens to, you just wont hear about it on a tv station with a anti-war agenda.

This has to be a joke right? Do you honestly think there was order or peace in iraq before? The opposing factions have always fought with each other before, the only difference is saddam tortured and murdered people who he felt opposed him.
