Attn Fat People: South Beach Diet

Ok fellow fat people (thats a majority of you based on the last conference I went to), this thread is for you...

I lost 70 pounds with Atkins back in 2003 and looked and felt great. Then I gained like 20 pounds back when I hurt my knee that fall and couldnt do anything except sit on my ass... I stopped lifting and running. Then in Oct 2004 I quit smoking (successfully) and havent stopped eating since.

The 70 pounds I lost with Atkins is all back. 30 of that gain was in the last 4 months!! (relocated to another state, new house, new gig, new baby all since December...). Pizza and cheese steaks are the fucking devil. In 2003 I wore a loose 34 jeans, now I'm wearing a tight 42. I have no energy and feel like shit.

Atkins is just too restrictive for me to do it again.. South Beach is more about "good" carbs and "leaner" meats VS the "no carbs" and "whatever fatty meats you want" on Atkins. I'll take lean ground sirloin burgers and 1/2 a bun over a full-fat burger and no bun anyday...

My ambitious goal is to lose the first 50 pounds in the next 4 months (~3lbs/wk) and then the next 20 will probably take me the rest of the year. I'm 6'2 and built like a linebacker... when I start working out I lose weight very quickly.

Anybody have luck on South Beach? Anyone doing it now? Thinking of starting?

Discuss. :)

I agree totally man. Just be consistant with your food, work out and you'll do fine. I've been naturally skinny all my life and never had to worry about it. I've always admired those who have to work at it, becuase it takes real determination to keep it off. I wish I had that kind of dedication.:thumbsup

why does it matter what the "diet" is. figure out how many calories you need per day. eat 500 less per day. do low impact cardio (most effective before breakfast). lift weights. make sure you are getting the right amount of macro nutrients and in the right proportions (i.e. x% of your cals come from carbs, x% from fats, x% from protein ... example 40/40/20) and thats it. there is no magic formula that works across the board for all people unless it involves major calorie depravation. it requires some experimentation and real attention to what you are doing, what you are eating, what you are doing, whats working, what's not working etc. go to any bodybuilding forum and you will see that its something EVERYONE struggles with.

don't get hung up on fad diets. there is just too much confusion and terrible information out there.

there is nothing magic about any specific diet. generally speaking, if you eat clean and you are exercising, you can eat as much as you want and you body will metabolize everything.

So nobody has any south beach specific comments?

StuartD 04-18-2006 10:24 AM

I love the "just do this and you'll be fine" approach that non fat people have.

Multi millionaires have the same approach about money. "just do this and this, and you'll make a fortune."

The thing is, those approaches aren't wrong... but they're not as easy as "just do this" to people who are struggling with it.

A good friend of mine went with the south beach diet for the same reasons you just posted, and it worked well for him. He was very strict with his carbs though, and worked out on a daily basis.

It is just that easy. Put the fucking Pepsi down, get some regular exercise. Anything else is just an excuse.

No, it's not just that easy, I do get plenty of exercise quite regularly and your not putting down the crack pipe is hardly a good excuse either.
Thanks for sharing your little view into my world once again though. I should make a reality show, because I know I'd have at least one devoted watcher in you :1orglaugh

The fact that you're a big dumb idiot aside, I'm trying to help you here.

I myself dropped 50 pounds in the last 4 months. Weight that I put after I quit smoking, and spending a year sitting around doing nothing but working on a computer.

The fact of the matter is that if you eat a properly balanced strict diet, and do cardio exercise, you will lose weight. It's just how badly you want it. Your body is most likely not a magical mass that doesn't respond to the laws of nutrition an exercise,.

I kept my diet to 2000 calories with less than 30 grams of fat and did an hour of cardio, and other exercise. This allowed me to rapidly cut fat, but I spend 20 hours a week in a gym fighting, lifting weights or running. Obviously, as a father of a young child, with a full time job you have to commute to, you're not going to have 20 hours a week to spare. That doesn't mean you can't lose weight, it just means you can't do it as rapidly as I did it, that's all.

What's most important, is the change in diet. Until you start writing down what you eat each day, and adding up it's caloric, fat, protein and carb values, you probably really have no idea how much you're eating. 2000 calories, for instance, is really not a lot of food and fat grams add up on you quickly. I bet you take in more than 1000 calories a day in liquids. That's probably about half of your total caloric need for a day. Counting calories works.

Unlike your highly original and cerebral use of a crack pipe reference? :Oh crap

uno 04-18-2006 11:53 AM

I lost 10-15 lbs on it. I keep hovering in a 5 lb range mostly because I cheat every now and then, don't excersize at all and drink(low carb alcohols). A friend of mine lost 50 or 60 lbs in a few months on a more strict regimen of excersize and intake.

if its harder for you.. then its harder for you. i wish i had a 12 inch cock. i dont.. so what?? thats life. its hard as hell for me to lose weight... and you know what? its a massive challenge for EVERY bodybuilder to get down to 2-3% bodyfat before a show. but... they do it. you have to want it and you have to be serious about it and consistent in everything you do... thats all. end of story.

Pornwolf 04-18-2006 12:34 PM

If you think it's hard it will be hard.

I know that sounds simple but it's true. Losing weight is not hard. But if you have a glass half empty outlook it's never going to happen for you.

I've watched Warchild lose a ton of weight quickly. Lemme tell you, I've been working out and consulting people on fitness for damn near 20 years now. He has developed one of the most airtight fitness plans I have ever seen. If he can do what he in the short amount of time that he did it then anyone can.

He offered you some good, free advice in this thread. Why don't you take it to heart?

People can do amazing things when they try and believe that they can. If you don't believe you'll ever lose those extra couple inches, you never will.

yeah its pretty simple, burn off more calories than you intake and you will lose weight. anyone who says otherwise is probably trying to convince themselves that it doesnt work because they just dont have the willpower.

Don't know what to tell ya pal. At one time I lost 50 pounds within a year, probably 9 months or so. No exercise, haha. Of course I was younger, that may have made it easier, don't know. Haven't put any of it back on aside from regular weight fluctuations. It was fucking brutal. I totally changed the way I ate. Right now its just every day life and doesn't bother me a bit.

PimpDaddyPants 04-18-2006 01:01 PM

South Beach Diet = Coccaine,Vodka, and wheatthins

Rather than just focussing on "losing weight", you have to change your life. Eat organic foods, cut out the snacks & fast foods, quit drinking soda pop, and commit to a daily exercise plan. You will end up losing weight, but the key thing is to change your life so that all those things that contributed to the weight gain won't be in your life anymore.

As to exercise, I tried all sorts of things to get fit before I finally found something that works for me. I tried swimming, cycling, belly dancing, aerobics, pilates, and going to the gym. You know what exercise has really made the difference for me? Yoga. It just goes to show that if you keep at it, you'll eventually find what works for you.

Good luck!

topnotchxxx 04-18-2006 02:44 PM

Well, I am on Atkins and basically you do not need to stay in Induction for the rest of your life. I agree the first two weeks can be quite restrictive but when you scale up through the different stages, you should be able to add carbs back. Of course, moderation is the key. There is nothing stopping you from having a pizza or a burger once in a while but just when you can, do the lo-carb way. Make a cautious effort to skip soda, sugar and anything that is not nice. Load up on the greens and that helps.

I would say do give Atkins another chance. It is worth it. Do a healthy lifestyle and learn to drink the good old plain water.

try this...it's simple and it works.

THINK....before you eat.

Sit back and watch the weight fall off...

reynold 04-18-2006 07:54 PM

I just rely on work out to lose weight. Its hard for me to stay away from food

...coming from someone who has to "try" if i want to say in decent shape...the other guys is right...its much more simple than people want to make it out to be. The reason is because people would rather talk about what they are going to do than do it. Same goes with work, which is why business consulting is fun sometimes :winkwink:

But as far as diets go...it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know what eating healthy means. Eat more meals, smaller portions, less overall calories...stay away from the super fatty stuff....Cut down on DRINKING...beer, mixed drinks, shots, soda...

Start the day off with some exercise (taking the dog out or chasing your kids around is not exercise). Go for a 3-5 mile run. Before you know it, you dont have a diet....you'll have a lifestyle.

The key to improving/maintaining one's health is a change in lifestyle, not a fad diet.
