What is your faveorite lyric?

shermo 04-18-2006 01:08 AM

"Stupid people do stupid things, smart people outsmart each other, and themselves". SOAD

Nydahl 04-18-2006 01:11 AM

one is really good 1 but for me anything by Pink Floyds - better say Roger Waters.
Really complicated things in easy words
for example "Hey you" is unbeatable lyric for me
True is thatI am not a native speaker so I can feel the little bit different way

Tex Willer 04-18-2006 01:15 AM

Snoop? I believe it was Dr Dre. who said those lyrics in that song.

Lyrics wise I like both.

WebairGerard 04-18-2006 12:27 PM

some good ones there for sure.

4. Bob Marley -- "Redemption Song" Great Song, GREAT LYRICS

U2's One is very good too, as is Creep by Radiohead.

How about these classics:

Bob Dylan: Baby Blue

Pink Floyd: Mother

Rolling Stones: Sympathy for the Devil and You can't always get what you want.

The Beatles: too many to name :)

PaperJamal 04-18-2006 12:29 PM

I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so...

Why can't we just end it?

The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive... so it is, so it's always been

One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

I love so many lyrics but as this is a British survey here are some British lyrics that I love that didn't make the top 20:

Depeche Mode - Blasphemous Rumours:

"I don?t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that god?s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find him laughing"

The Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict:

"you're makin' out with school kids, winos and heads of state.
you even made it with the lady, who puts the little plastic bobins on the christmas cakes. Butchers' assistants and bellhops, you've had them all here and there. Children of god and their joy-strings, international women with no body hair.echanic's rough you're more than ready."

The Clash - Train In Vain:

"Say you stand by your man
Tell me something I don't understand
You said you loved me and that's a fact
and then you left me, said you felt trapped

Well some things you can't explain away
But the heartache's in me till this day"

The Jam - Going Underground:

"And the public wants what the public gets
But I don?t get what this society wants
I?m going underground"

The Cure - Just Like Heaven:

"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream she said
The one that makes me laugh she said
And threw her arms around my neck"

sublime:

April 26th, 1992,
there was a riot on the streets,
tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV,
while I was paticipatin' in some anarchy.

First spot we hit it was my liqour store.
I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford.
With red lights flashin' time to retire,
And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire.

Next stop we hit it was the music shop,
It only took one brick to make that window drop.
Finally we got our own p.a.
Where do you think I got this guitar that you're hearing today?
Hey!

Never doin no time

When we returned to the pad to unload everything,
It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings.
So once again we filled the van until it was full,
since that day my livin' room's been more comfortable.

Ian 04-18-2006 08:55 PM

I thought most of them were crap. Definitely reflects on the ages (younger), who were probably polled.

If that's the best of the best then it just shows how much music, and lyrics, have gone downhill in the last 15 years or so.

:2 cents:

P.S.

Anyone ever listened to the lyrics of Simon and Garfunkel?

I rest my case. :1orglaugh

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence

on an unrelated note, while searching for lyrics, i came across the real gilr from ipanema site (according to http://sprezzatura.editthispage.com/garota#story)

dumbest lyrics ever

"Someone's Knockin' At The Door.
Somebody's Ringin' The Bell.
Someone's Knockin' At The Door.
Somebody's Ririgin' The Bell.
Do Me A Favor,
Open The Door And Let 'Em In."

A song about someone knocking on your door. I didn;t know you could make music about everyday stuff. let me try

"Someone's pissin' in the john.
Somebody's usin' The can.
Someone's pissin' in the john.
Somebody's usin' The can.
Do Me A Favor,
Flush the bowl And Lift the lid."

I LOVE that song. The Clash rule.

corvette 04-18-2006 09:11 PM

hope this is not too long, the lyrics to the translation of the first verse of Garota de Ipanema

Look, what a most beautiful thing there
moreover full of grace
and she, this girl that comes and goes
with this sweet, swinging gait, along the way to the sea. . .

The girl with this golden body from the Ipanema sun
Her swinging gait is more than a poem
and the most beautiful thing that I ever saw go by

Ah! why am I so alone?
Ah! why is everything so sad?
Ah! the beauty that is there!
The beauty that is not just mine . . .
that is also passing by alone.

Ah! if she only knew that when she passes by
the world is smiling
filling up with grace
and turns more beautiful
because of love

great lyrics

Loryn 04-18-2006 09:43 PM

Like a desert needs rain
Like a town needs a name
I need your love

Like a drifter needs a room
Hawkmoon
I need your love
I need your love

Like a rhythm unbroken
Like drums in the night
Like sweet soul music
Like sunlight
I need your love

Like coming home
And you don't know where you've been
Like black coffee
Like nicotine

I need your love (I need your love)
I need your love (I need your love)
I need your love (I need your love)

When the night has no end
And the day yet to begin
As the room spins around

I need your love
I need your love

Like a Phoenix rising needs a holy tree
Like the sweet revenge of a bitter enemy
I need your love

Like the hot needs the sun
Like honey on her tongue
Like the muzzle of a gun
Like oxygen

I need your love (I need your love)
I need your love (I need your love)
I need your love (I need your love)

When the night has no end
And the day yet to begin
As the room spins around

I need your love
I need your love...

Like thunder needs rain
Like a preacher needs pain
Like tongues of flame
Like a sheet stained

I need your love
I need your love

Like a needle needs a vein
Like someone to blame
Like a thought unchained
Like a runaway train

I need your love
I need your love...

Like faith needs a doubt
Like a freeway out
I need your love

Like powder needs a spark
Like lies need the dark

I need your love
In the heart of the heat of the love
In the heart of the heat of the love...

And this one too:

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
Surrender
Dislocate

If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free
I'd lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they'd
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Blue silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would
Let it go...

This desperation
Dislocation
Separation
Condemnation
Revelation
In temptation
Isolation
Desolation
Let it go

And so fade away
To let it go
And so fade away
To let it go
And so to fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

One more:

And love
It's not the easy thing
The only baggage
That you can bring
Not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
Before the second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on
Walk on
What you got, they can't steal it
No they can't even feel it

Walk on
Walk on
Stay safe tonight

You're packing a suitcase for a place
None of us has been
A place that has to be believed
To be seen

You could have flown away
A singing bird
In an open cage
Who will only fly
Only fly for freedom

Walk on
Walk on
What you got
You can't deny it
Can't sell it or buy it

Walk on
Walk on
Stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
You can only take so much

Walk on
Walk on

Home
Hard to know what it is
If you never had one

Home
I can't say where it is
But I know I'm going

Home
That's where the hurt is

And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
You can only take so much

Walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind

All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you steal
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you care

It's only time
And I'll never fill up all my mind (??)

All that you sense
All that you speak
All you dress up
And all that you scheme

All you create
All that you wreck
All that you hate

U2 is my favorite band, so I could post the words to every song they have, but those three are around the top of my list!!! :thumbsup
