AUGUSTA, Maine - Two registered sex offenders were gunned down in their central Maine homes early Sunday, and a Canadian man sought in connection with the slayings fatally shot himself after Boston police cornered him on a bus, officials said.

Stephen A. Marshall, 20, shot himself in the head with a .45 caliber handgun when officers stopped the bus he was on and climbed aboard, said David Procopio, spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney.

Officers heard a gunshot and found Marshall with a massive head wound in a window seat 13 rows behind the driver, Procopio said.

He was rushed to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m., a hospital spokeswoman said.

No one else on the bus was injured, Procopio said, but five passengers who were splattered with blood were taken to area hospitals to be examined.

Maine State Police alerted Boston authorities that Marshall could be heading to the city, about 250 miles south, after Marshall?s pickup truck was found abandoned. Police discovered bullets linked to him in the bathroom at a bus station in Bangor, Maine.

The shootings of Joseph L. Gray, 57, of Milo, and William Elliott, 24, of Corinth, led state police to take down the Maine Sex Offender Registry Web site as a precaution, state Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said. The site lists the photos, names and addresses of more than 2,200 sex offenders.

The pickup truck Marshall was driving was spotted leaving one of the victims? homes after the shooting, Maine police said.

It was not immediately clear if or how Marshall knew either Gray or Elliott, or whether the three men had any connection, McCausland said.

Marshall, who lived in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, had come to Houlton, Maine, for the first time to meet his father, McCausland said. He added that Marshall was driving his father?s pickup.

I remember one arrest by a lawdog friend with a sense of humor - less dramatic than a gunfight - she stood at the back of a church while the service was in progress and the pastor delivered his sermon and then arrested him for child molestation :1orglaugh

actually i might be wrong about the scout leader. just searching thru news stories to see what these guys were convicted of , there was a guy with same name arrested for molesting boys but the age doesnt match up..

There was a woman arrested on South Beach a few years back, because she changed from her street clothes to a bikini on a public beach. There happened to be some kids around. their mom called the police, and the woman was arrested, and charged with a sex offense, and now is on a sexual offender list.

Not to sure that I agree with people killing the pople listed on those lists.

isnt south beach a nude beach? i must have seen 5 or 10 naked girls when i was there a couple months ago.

Yes and no. The law states that it is NOT clothing optional, but because of the tourism, they let people get away with it. UNLESS, there is a complaint.

And that is what happened to this girl that day, there happened to be NO others topless or nude in the area, and this other woman was there with her family. 2 children saw her take off her clothes, and put on a bikini.


I dont feel that this should make the woman a sexual offender, but under state law, it does.

A guy who goes on a killing spree and then kills himself may just be a bit mentally unstable, and thus not entirely reasonable and thorough in his choice of and research on targets.

The obvious conclusion is he either found 2 people that had sexually offended someone he knewor him .... or just picked 2 sick cases and killed them..

Does it make any sense he would just pick 2 people at random from the list in cities apart... not likely..

Or, he just picked a number of random people on the list and wanted to kill as many as he could until he got caught.

Remember, again, we're talking about someone who went on a killing spree before killing himself here. People like that generally aren't very sensible.

could be , still doesnt sound very realistic at all... sounds more realistic he picked the 2 TOP sicko's , as he picked 2 cities that were seperate , if he used you theory he would have killed all the ones in the city first before going to an entirely different city.:thumbsup
